Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Gloria Estefan came to U.S. prominence with a series of endearingly clean-cut, upbeat post-disco hits in the mid-'80s. Since then, she's dabbled in a variety of styles (adult-contemporary balladry, Cuban-lite) but continually returned to politely rocking the dance floor (a revival of Vicki Sue Robinson's classic "Turn the Beat Around"). That's her project on Gloria!, and while the album doesn't hold the appeal of "Conga" or "Rhythm is Gonna Get You," it's hard to dismiss moments like the bubble-salsa of "Oye" or the deep-groove Wyclef Jean duet "Don't Release Me." --Rickey Wright

CD Description
On her follow-up to 1996's largely acoustic, relatively subdued DESTINY, Gloria Estefan turns in an upbeat, lighthearted direction, populating GLORIA! with buoyant dance rhythms and vibrant arrangements. The sound recalls Estefan's musicalorigins with Miami Sound Machine, augmented by contributorsranging from Estefan regulars Pablo Flores and Javier Garzato Soul Solution and the Fugees' Wyclef Jean, who raps on the sensuous "Don't Release Me". A mixture of disco, funk, and Latin music infuses the entire album, with Spanish vocals on "Oye" and "Cuba Libre" paying tribute to Estefan's musical heritage. Overall, GLORIA! is rife with an appealing senseof loose playfulness and one danceable, salsa-spiked song after another.

Pure Brilliance5
Gloria Estefan has outdone herself on producing this, possibly the best of all her albums. I have most of her albums, and this by far is my favourite. This album is a good one for people who have not really experienced Gloria before or since the 80's. "Heaven's what I feel" provides a good blend of modern pop, latin beat and music from the heart. "Don't release me" is more modern, and my favourite "Cuba Libre" is a song which uses Gloria's best brand of Latin style. I would recommend this album to everybody, because it has something for everybody. Gloria has her usual Spanish remixes of songs towards the end of the album. Some people avoid them, but I think that they provide a wonderful contrast. They convey the fact that Gloria still is a cuban at heart, and that she wants to go back there one day when it is free (Cuba Libre).

A Real Feel Good Smash Of Music. Excellent!5
One of the best albums I have heard for a long time. It conjers up images of summer parties, tequila, and a good time, not to be taken too seriously, but to lift you up on a bad day.

It is nice to see Glo varying her styles, so totally different from Destiny, and Mi Tierra - it has life, energy, and loads of bounce. An excellent album to get your body moving, and the room jumping. It sends a tingle down my spine. It just goes to show that by varying her music styles, Gloria is able to appeal to a whole range of people, and be all inclusive. Go and buy it!

Glorious!5
The great thing about Gloria Estefan is that EVERY album is different from the previous one - "gloria!" was made with the intention of being a dance album from start to finish. If you listen to Gloria's superb back catalogue you'll know that she is the queen of ballads, but she also likes to party - in a career spanning over 20 years, she has never released an album of entirely dance tracks - the previous reviewer mentioned that he liked the "Destiny" album, which is great, but if an artist releases the same style of album all the time, fans will get bored. I suggest he listens to more than one Gloria Estefan album to appreciate the diversity of this very talented performer. Stand out tracks are "Heaven's What I Feel", "Oye", "Don't Let This Moment End", "Touched By An Angel" and the wonderful, heartfelt "Cuba Libre" - and why shouldn't there be remixes and Spanish versions for Gloria's Latin fans? This IS the sound of Gloria Estefan - here's looking forward to "Alma Caribenas" and even more Gloria albums to come!
