Amazon.co.uk Review
Bedpan humour rules in Carry On Doctor, the vintage 1968 offering from the familiar gang, assisted by guest star Frankie Howerd as bogus faith healer Francis Bigger. Hospitals, of course, always provided the Carry On producers with plenty of material. Today, these comedies induce a twinge of serious nostalgia for the great days of the National Health Service when Matron (Hattie Jacques, naturally) ran the hospital as if it was a house of correction, medical professionals were idolised as if they were all Doctor Kildare and Accident and Emergency Departments were deserted oases of calm. But even if you aren't interested in a history lesson, Talbot Rothwell's script contains some immortal dialogue, particularly when Matron loosens her stays. "You may not realise it but I was once a weak man", says Kenneth Williams' terrified Doctor Tinkle to Hattie Jacques. "Once a week's enough for any man", she purrs back, undaunted. Other highlights include Joan Sims, excellent as Frankie Howerd's deaf, bespectacled sidekick, Charles Hawtrey suffering from a phantom pregnancy, 1960s singer Anita Harris in a rare film role, and Barbara Windsor at her most irrepressible as nurse Sandra May. This is one of the best.

On the DVD: Presented in 1.77:1 format for a pseudo-widescreen effect, the picture quality is good and sharp, accompanied by a standard mono soundtrack. The same no-frills approach is taken with the packaging; a functional scene index and no extras. Yet again, a missed opportunity to use the DVD release to provide some context. At their best, the Carry On films are rightly seen as classic comedies of their type. They really deserve to be better celebrated. --Piers Ford

Synopsis
A certain hospital, bordering on mental institution, is headed up by the slightly crazy medical team of Dr. Kilmore and Dr. Tinkle. Their abnormal patients and love-starved nurses make for a prescription of laughter as the best medicine in this British production.

Absolutely Splendid!5
This has got to be my favourite out of all the Carry On films. The casting is superb with Kenneth Williams as Dr Tinkle, and Hattie Jacques as Matron. Willams is at his best with flaring nostrils and shrill voice, striking fear into the male patients on Fosdick Ward! There are laughs galore throughout and none of the jokes fall flat! Charles Hawtrey shines as Mr Barren, who is suffering from a phantom pregnancy! The smile is soon wiped off his face when Dr Tinkle sends him to ante-natal classes with the women! A hilarious send up of the NHS, and a must for any Carry On fans. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it, especially if you are a Kenneth Williams fan! Definitely worth the money.

Funny...and really interesting!5
I grew up watching Carry Ons - but I never really thought about buying the DVD's until I happened to pick up one in a shop and read about the audio commentary by Jim Dale. Now Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims and Burnard Bresslaw are no longer with us he's the last (in my humble opinion) of what I class as my REAL Carry On gang and it was great listening to Jim talk his way through what he remembers of making the films (the most clear memories seem to be the pain involved in some of the stunts!!) It was also lovely hearing him talk about his co-stars - the real, personal memories of people he worked with for many years, people that were far more than the human caricatures they seem to have become. He was friends with who he says was the real Kenneth Williams and he'll tell you what Sid James was really like to work with - a true gentleman. These films are a British institution and stars are some of the most intriguing actors in British comedy. Having these commentaries gives you a real personal insight into their making...from a very funny man!

A classic!4
I'm not fan of the series, and this was only the 4th Carry On that I have seen. I found this, like the others, very amusing.

The characters are quite hilarious and play their parts well, especially Kenneth Williams and Sid James. Sid the old geezer who has been smoking too much, and Kenneth playing the somewhat evil doctor who nobody actually likes. The rest of the staff are too a riot.

The storyline is a bit unplausable but that's what makes them funny. Most of the story gives you a comical insight of hospital life.

Some parts I didn't understand, but that is down to the film being more then twice as old as me, but nether the less, I still found it hilarious. It's great to sit down and watch with your friends and just have a laugh.
