I found this book to be very informative if you have never sailed before. The book is straightforward and very easy to learn the basics.
RYA Competent crew
When you first pick it up it looks like a cartoon book. But this is the best way to illustrate what they are talking about. Simple easy logical steps to learn the basics. One tip take the book with you on your course as things become clearer when you have a diagram of what the instructor is trying to tell you.
