Amazing!
This film is based on the amazing true story of Mary Bryant, a young Cornish girl transported to Botany Bay for stealing a bonnet. Resourceful and determined, Mary is willing to do whatever it takes to survive the harsh journey to Australia and the grim penal colony. She employs whatever means are at her disposal to protect herself and her children, even if it involves deceiving and using others. In this respect she is not always a completely likeable character, but thanks to Romola Garai's excellent portrayal one can't help but admire Mary's incredible determination as she fights for freedom, and cheer her on! As well as plenty of action, suspense, and at times rather graphic portrayals of life in the penal colony, there is also romance and passion. Two men fall for the strong-willed Mary: an easy-going fellow prisoner Will, and one of their jailers, Lieutenant Ralph Clarke. Although Jack Davenport as the lieutenant has the task of serving as the bad guy of the film, his nuanced and appealing performance - as well as his striking good looks in the 18th-century naval uniform - create an unexpected effect, as the viewer may find themselves at times sympathising with the "villain" of the story. All in all, a great adventure story with memorable characters; beautiful photography and costumes.
definitely one for the romantics!
I found this series really gripping from start to finish, and thoroughly enjoyed it mostly because I'm a big romantic and I absolutely loved Will Bryant ("They said we'd never see the sun down here, but there you are")!! The acting was terrific, there's a great 'girl power' theme going on, and there were some truly emotional scenes that moved me to tears! It's not all romance and tears though, there's a fair bit of action going on, what with Mary's escape from the island and her being on the run! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of romance and adventure.
'A must see drama!!!!'
The story of Mary Bryant is both incredible and captivating, offering amazing insights into how far people will go to protect themselves in desperate situations. Mary is a powerful and strong female character who will do whatever it takes to save herself and her children.Finding herself in an impossible situation she risks the lives of her family in an attempt to save them, knowing that there is every chance they will die trying to escape. Its a story of love, survival and cruelty put together superbly and acted brilliantly.
