Customer Reviews
Sparkling Sutherland
This album, mainly from the early sixties, shows Joan's coloratura ability at its very finest - which is to say second to none! There's little by way of grand opera here, but it's a delightful collection nonetheless of songs and operetta arias. No allowances have to be made for the sound quality because this is Decca at its best and the accompaniments from Bonynge as both conductor and pianist are excellent. The original vinyl album would have been rather short so, to increase the running length of this CD, Decca has added 4 items from the slightly later "Love Live Forever" operetta album. These are great, but to me they do seem a little out of place in the middle of the disc. I would rather they had been added at the end. However, this is to be a bit churlish because that later album is hard to find (and worth seeking out). Any lover of spectacular singing should have this in their collection.
