Customer Reviews
A bargain!
Excellent singing, a good recording and nice conducting, teamed with the bargain price, makes this a very good set.
Joan Sutherland sounds fresh and vibrant, singing the Bell Song and the Duet with considerable skill.
In 1967 she was probably at her best. Earlier, in the late 1950's and early 60's her voice was magically young and strong but her diction could be rather poor. While later, during the 1970's and 1980's her diction improved but her voice lost some of its strength. Here her diction is improved and her voice remains totally young and glittering ( this set was recorded around the same time as her recording of "La fille du regiment" with Pavarotti, which proves to be amongst her finest recordings). Her supportive cast is very strong, especially the French tenor Alain Vanzo. His voice is light and golden, ideal for the role of Gerald.
The recording is good and the conducting by Richard Bonynge, Sutherland's husband, proves very strong.
For the price this is an excellent set, it remains one of the best recordings of this opera at any price.
