Mature power and grace
Although a late recording for Sutherland, her assumption of the role of the much put-upon Anna is done with enormous power and moving eloquence. The voice may have lost some of the ethereal bloom of earlier days and the coloratura may be less fleet than previously, but what she gains is a wonderfully emotional warmth - and the sound is still huge and deeply moving. As always, top notes ring true and full, right up the range, and the bottom of her sublime instrument throbs with a burnished beauty. Bonynge does rather rattle through the score, but for elegance and phrasing he still shows how it should be done. It's scandalous that he never came back to Covent Garden or the Met after his wife's retirement: presumably was never asked? We need great advocates of the bel canto style and he is one of the best. Other roles are taken with satisfying consistency, Ramey being particularly exciting as he relishes Henry's bombastic music. All in all, this is a wonderful set and the sound comes out of Decca's top drawer.
