DVD Description
This film tells the story of Dame Joan Sutherland – one of the greatest operatic performers of the late twentieth century.
Shy and lacking in confidence, she sang unnoticed at Covent Garden for seven years after arriving from Australia, but over the course of twelve months she was transformed into ‘La Stupenda’.
Focusing on the two roles that launched her on the international stage, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ and ‘Alcina’, this documentary tells her story through major new interviews with Dame Joan, Richard Bonynge, Franco Zeffirelli, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne and Sherrill Milnes.
Synopsis
She was a nervous young singer who went on to become one of the greatest operatic voices of the twentieth century. In 1960, Joan Sutherland gave a remarkable performance of Alcina at Venice’s La Fenice opera house that earned her the moniker ‘La Stupenda’ (The Stupendous One). This film tells the story of the ‘diva from Down Under’ through exclusive interviews with Dame Joan herself, Richard Bonynge, Franco Zeffirelli, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne, and Sherrill Milnes.

LA STUPENDA
Whatever comes along from the JS stable we have to treasure as she was an incredible performer for such a long time. It is unfortunate we don't have many DVD's of her work in the 60's & 70's when she was obviously at her very peak but glimpses of anything are better than nothing. Careers come and go so quickly now but this DVD is a reminder of why she was so popular and successful for so long. Having a reputation for being our Joanie but at the same time never suffering fools, she was a diva in the true sense of the word. Could actually have watched for longer, I'm sure they could have found more material, never mind, see this it's excellent!!
