Focal Digital Camera Guides: Nikon D60

Just bought a Nikon D60 and looking to combine practical know-how with inspiration? This one-stop, easy-to-read guide covers all the basic functions of the camera, and everything beyond.

For the basics, turn to the quick start guide, which will get you up and running in five minutes.

For an understanding of your camera's many controls and features, check out the section called "The Camera." If all you need is a quick explanation, you'll find it. If you're looking for the Whole Story, you'll find that, too. Settings that affect how your pictures look are accompanied by full-color examples that show you exactly what you can expect. This section also covers the camera's menus, playback features, memory cards, and power sources.

The section called "Software" shows you how to get the most out of your camera's software. It covers downloading, editing your photos, RAW conversion, storing your images, managing your library, and backup strategies - to name just a few topics.

Ultimately, this book's greatest strength isn't its focus on the camera or the software; it's the detailed, easy-to-follow instruction it offers on using your camera to take truly superior photographs. Sections devoted to lenses, subject matter, and light cover these variables in depth, always presenting the most effective techniques in the context of the strengths and limitations of the Nikon D60.

Editorial Reviews

Review
". he gets you going right away and, when you have a second, he gently explains what's going on, showing you how to do this or that. And Hilz doesn't shy away from the complexities, which he calls challenges. He simply points out some of the things to watch out for in a straightforward list. That makes the inevitable failures less frustrating and more intriguing. There is not a page of the book (apart from the chapter introductions) that doesn't have at least one full-color illustration (and the rule is several) to show you what Hilz is talking about. Every section is liberally sprinkled with tips in sidebars of their own in a very thorough introduction to modern dSLR photography." - The Imaging Resource Digital Photography newsletter, http://www.imaging-resource.com

"I thought this was a great book to introduce a person to the digital SLR. I liked how the book had the Visual Tour of the camera, Quick Start and How to get good images out of the camera in 5 minutes at the beginning of the book. It was all the information you needed without having to read the manual that comes with the camera, which is always more difficult to understand." -Yumiko Wilson, YWPhotography

A must buy for any DSLR owner!5
I recently got a D60 Nikon DSLR, and had no idea how to use it! I love photography- but haven't been able to get an SLR or DSLR - so knew almost nothing about the technical side of them. I got a user guide with the camera- which is pretty useless to be honest- for someone like me- whom needs to know how somthing works - before it 'clicks' in my mind. I also bought a book - on digital photography- that also proved to be not much help...This book however- is incredible & I would recommend anyone knew to DSLR's to get one for their camera- this range of books- as far as I can tell- make them for most specific models- it gives you the basics- for a total beginner- it explains it very clearly, and it gives you large images of things like: lcd display & functions, buttons, etc...It totally guides you and teaches you in a very good way.
If I had known how good this book was- I would have been willing to pay £50 for it- it is that good.

BUY IT BUY IT!5
im no stranger to DSLR's

and all i can say is, WOW

if your a beginer and the d60 is your first DSLR, BUY THIS BOOK!
if your a pro, with a d60 for tough locations or draft shots, BUY THIS BOOK!

its goes though EVERYTHING about the camera in really easy terms and i even learnt new things about my d300 and d2x, its great :)

BUY BUY BUY!

Adequate for complete beginners, otherwise not much more useful than the manual2
I ordered this book the day I got my new D60 - my first DSLR and even though I already had a basic understanding of photography I thought it would be pretty useful to have. However by the time the book arrived 2 days later I'd read most of the manual and the book itself didn't add much to my understanding of how the camera worked.

The book is quite patronising a lot of the time and often points out the glaringly obvious, which may be useful for some people but if you have even a basic understanding of things it gets boring pretty fast (for example, he goes on about things like how the camera even records the date the photo was taken which you can then use to find the photo later on your computer; anyone who has owned a basic compact digital camera should know that, which probably accounts for 99% of people buying the D60).

I found the print quality of the book to be quite poor - when there are several photos next to each other used to illustrate a point, especially in the smaller photos, for example some identical photos taken using different flash or white balance settings, the print quality is so bad that you can barely tell the difference thus making it pretty useless.

The second half of the book talks about generic photography skills (lenses, composition, ISO settings etc) which might be useful if you're looking for an all-in-one book but these things are much better explained and in more detail in other books - for example the excellent "book of digital photography" by Chris George, which I ordered at the same time and is proving much more useful.

In summary this book will probably be a good introduction if you're an absolute beginner and find the manual too difficult to follow (which it can be at times) but otherwise I'd skip it and just buy a more general in-depth book on digital photograpy like Chris George's.
