Lully – Atys (1676)

Charpentier – Médée (1693) With Lorraine Hunt in the title-role.

Locke – Psyche (1675) A semi-opera. I wish someone would record Banister's "Circe" (1677). Try Purcell's "King Arthur" too (B000005EEH/B00029CXB8).

Purcell – Dido and Aeneas (ca1684) If only Purcell had lived to compose more English operas . . .

Eccles – Semele (1707) An abysmal performance of an excellent opera. Why hasn't William Christie recorded this opera yet? It's crying out for Les Arts Florissants!

Telemann – Damon (1719/24)

Rameau – Hyppolyte et Aricie (1733) Minkowski has Gens & Fouchécourt but Christie has Lorraine Hunt and a more effective underworld scene, plus a more dramatic orchestral sound etc.

Handel – Ariodante (1734) A superb recording of a superb opera. I cannot recommend it more highly. McGegan's recording is also excellent (his best, in my opinion).

Handel – Serse (1738) Brilliant recording, brilliant comic opera. Who better to record it than Christie & LAF, von Otter et al?!

Handel – Hercules (1745) Another English masterpiece and surely the finest, most gripping recording of any of Handel's dramas. Try Belshazzar (1745) too (B000000S8D).

Arne – Alfred (1740) from which the marvellous anthem "Rule Britannia" originates; full of great tunes! For another example of an English masque try William Boyce’s "Peleus and Thetis" (B000002ZZ6).

Arne – Artaxerxes (1762) A splendid recording of the only surviving (one of two) opera seria in English. Highly recommended.
