Customer Reviews

More than just an opening book5
Sadler has produced one of the best chess books of recent years. Although at first glance this is simply a treatise on the QGD, this book is much more. The author introduces the main variations through a series of games but manages to explain the basics chess strategy in his beautifully written commentaries. This has already been voted chess book of the year and it is well deserved. If you are going to buy one chess opening book, you must buy this. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Outstanding5
I wholeheartedly concur with the other reviews here - for my money this ranks as one of the best openings books ever written. A lot of openings books these days claim that they explain the key ideas as well as providing oodles of theory. Too often the justification for such claims amounts to a short and often rather simplistic 'strategy' section at the start of each chapter. In this case, however, Sadler really leaves you with the impression that you understand the opening not just in outline but also, subtleties of move order, nuances of piece and pawn placements. Outstanding. Too bad Sadler appears to have given up chess :-(

One of the best books on openings5
This is one of the best books on openings I've ever read. It is more than just a treatise on the Queen's Gambit Declined: reading this book will improve your chess, whatever opening you play. I particularly liked the question-answer format.
