Customer Reviews
THE best book for REALLY learning to understand positional chess.
A lot of positive reviews are written for this book and having read it (and re-read it) myself, I can see why.
This book is nothing short of fantastic.
If you've ever wanted to understand chess in a positional context while learning a wholly useable method for formulating a plan of action and selecting the candidate moves that bring that plan to fruition then this is the book for you.
Mr.Silman manages to teach you these things with effortless skill using flowing examples and analysis all delivered with sparkling wit and good humour that make the learning a pleasure not a chore.
Useful nuggets of advice are littered through the text and he even gives you a full glossary of chess terms and an extensive recommended reading list covering every phase of the game.

Imbalances. Visualization. Thinking Methods.
Silman's idea and explanation of examining and using a position's imbalances, finding a realistic position, visualizing a desired position and then attempting to see if it can be obtained was worth the book's price.
Did Silman invent this "method?" No, you can find it assumed in other books, but Silman explicitly creates the framework.
Does he explain his method clearly? Yes, I've used his method successfully in my games and in studying other chess books.
Is Silman the last word? No, the many typos, redundancies, omissions, etc., make this a less-than complete book.
Will this book help improve your game? I think it should not only increase your skill level but will also help you to get more out of other "better" books on tactics, strategy, endgames, and so on.
Silman is a must read for all non-Master rated players who want to be Masters.
It will HELP you to improve your chess
Working through this book will help all but the strongest players improve their chess - but you will have to work at it. In particular (as with all books like this) you will have to work through the games, analyses, problems, and think. My positional understanding has improved greatly since reading this book - and I'm too lazy to do what I've just told you that you have to do! I would have liked more diagrams, however. You really need a chess board in front of you.
