Hidden Peach
Watch out for this label as they are collecting an impressive roster of artists. Keite Young releases his debut and yes it is ecclectic but maybe the world would be a better place if we all stop trying to categorise and segregate everything;in particular the arts.I was the same but it makes me laugh when I see college kids treating music like a religion and forgetting its main purpose-not to wear it on a badge or a t-shirt,but to entertain EVERYONE willing to open their ears and listen!
This is a refreshing debut with influences from the many different musical genres cited on Mr.Young's website. From blues to funk-I think the rockier tracks just underline the debt rock/pop music owes to the likes of the blues.
The only atist I can compare this to is Lyfe Jennings and that is not so much the music but more the vocal phrasing at times. I like both artists by the way-and they both have presented solid uncommercial sets in the last year or so.give this a listen, you may be soulfully suprised.
Eclectic, with mixed results
first came across Mr. Keite Young on the Everyday People Project where he has two joints, both of which (If We were Alone featuring N'Dambi, and Time) also appear on this CD. I have read the other reviews, and the general consensus is that the eclectic nature of this CD is one of it's major plus points. Whilst I would agree that I do admire an artist that isn't afraid to embrace different musical flavors, that in itself isn't enough to endeavor this CD to me. Whilst I don't mind Rock, music per se, the rockier numbers on display here Thinkuboutmi, Hey Joy...,) didn't do much for me, to be honest. I've had this CD for a while now, and I have refrained from posting a review, as I wanted to see if this CD as a whole grew on me. The Songs I am feeling are Masks (a Rockier number that I do feel) Pray, and Time (which has a blue/soul feel to it which is very addictive)
I do hope this CD doesn't fall through the cracks, and Hidden Beach will support him as a new emerging artist. So whilst this isn't a bad debut per se, and I do admire an artist that is willing to take a chance and present a CD that doesn't follow the status quo, the results themselves are mixed.
