Decent introduction to Joomla
It is a challenge to write a book for a beta version of any software. However, the current version (1.5) is pretty stable and is well supported in this book. It is highly readable and practical. It assumes a knowledge of CSS and HTML but manages the balance between novice and professional very well. Be aware that there is a great deal of useful material on the Joomla site and on associated forums so it is worth being aware of this efore you buy. Overall, though I recommend this book.
Displeased!!! Dont buy!!!
This book recommends using joomla 1.5, which isn't necisarrily a bad suggestion. However, 1.5 is still a beta version at the time of this writing and at the time I recieved the book. This obviously creates some problems. For example most extensions for joomla 1 don't work, despite the "legacy mode", including JCal which was recommended for use in the book.
I found chapter 13 to go into very little detail aswell, and I could have used a lot more help there. If your going to be using joomla 1.5 understand that there is much less support for it at the moment and you may well be better off going with version 1 still. This was written september 2007.
