Amazon.co.uk Review
Forget the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and all those other neo-swing outfits from across the pond, Jools Holland really knows how to swing. He also knows how to jive, not to mention shimmy, and could probably do a mean cakewalk if asked nicely. The lovable cockney may have made his name with Squeeze and become a household name as presenter of The Tube and Later With Jools Holland, but he's never made any secret of his lifelong passion for the blues. And if he's still best-known as a chirpy TV personality, there's little doubt that what he does best is play boogie-woogie piano. Backed by an energetic and enthusiastic band, his passion for brash, brassy, big-band jazz is given full reign here on an album that would have made Fats Domino or Louis Jordan proud. Admittedly, he's not a great singer, but fortunately vocalist Sam Brown is, and she appears on several tracks. Unlike ex-Stray Cats guitarist Brian Setzer--who runs his own big band in Los Angeles--Jools doesn't so much update swing-era classics, as pay homage to them with his own authentic-sounding compositions (plus a couple written with Squeeze colleague Chris Difford). Aside from a straight-ahead version of Monk's "Well You Needn't", when he does go in for a cover or two he wilfully selects either the oddball (Edwin Astley's Danger Man TV theme) or the unlikely ("Lady Madonna"). Perhaps that's the album's only weakness: Jools will insist on departing from the true path of rhythm & blues from time to time. Maybe he's just too eclectic for his own good? --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews
Another great albulm from Jools
With Sunset Over London, Jools Holland has yer again laid down his musical genius. All the tracks here have catchy tunes and catchy lyrics - take Dig Rythym and Blues for example. There is also a great cover version of the Beatles' Lady Madonna, here given the Jools treatment to great effect. What I like about this album is that the ttacks blend into one another effortlessly, allowing the listener to be taken on a musical journey.
Words cannot express
I too discovered the wonder of Jools Holland and his R&B Orchestra whilst casually attending a live concert. Since then I have been hooked.
"Sunset Over London" was the last of six Jools Holland albums I have purchased - and the best yet. Anyone who appreciates music at its finest will love this album. It combines perfect piano playing by Jools, with excellent accompanyment from his rhythmn and blues orchestra. Songs such as "Avenue C" (introduced by Robbie Coltrane) and "I Dig the Rhythmn and Blues" will have you boogieing until you have a stitch!
I am usually content when I like 4 or 5 songs on a CD - I was astounded after listening to this album and found I liked them all. Buy it and prepare to frenzy!
Superb
I had heard the occasional tune on his late-night show and having bought this CD will definitely buy more. His voice is pretty good but his tunes and the piano playing are faultless. Recommended to anyone who likes to tap their feet.
