The OGWT of its day
Jools Holland 'Later...' is today's equivalent of the Old Grey Whistle Test with recordings of acts before they were known and some who will probably never make it big, and in years to come the recordings may well be all that exists of some of the artists. Similarly, we also see some artists from decades past who turn up out of the blue with stunning 'live' performances.
This is an eclectic mix which has tried to avoid duplication of the other Later DVDs and, with 62 performances, is great value for money.
To me the stand out performances are: - from recent artists KT Tunstall's singing Bob Dylan's 'Tangled Up In Blue', Arcade Fire's 'Power Out', Damien Rice's 'Blowers Daughter' and Radiohead's ' No Surprises' and from artists from years gone by John Fogerty singing that Creedence classic 'Fortunate Son', Arthur Lee/Love 'Alone again Or' and the late Johnny Cash singing 'The Beast In Me'. Where else could you find a wider set of musical styles and every performance is live.
I would have given this 5 stars if a few more performances by the legends were included, but what we have here is nearly 4 hours of great music, well done Jools!
not my piece of cake
Not half as good as any from the rest of the series. Was expecting much, much more. My personal opinion is that this double DVD does not inclcude even 10% of the best LWJH performances over the past 15 years, I guess that also comes down to personal taste...
Worthy addition to excellent boxset
If you loved the box set that came before it, you will find this a bonus addition. All the performances follow the same format that has made the 'Later' series so successful. There are no tracks from the box set repeated here. Absolute class and this is the cream.
