Customer Reviews

The specs on this page don't do it justice5
It is not often that you open some packaging only to find you got more than you were expecting. I wanted to use an old monitor with my games consoles (I don't have a TV) and bought this box as it was cheap enough and standard definition video through a composite cable (that is the yellow connector normally coupled with white and red audio connectors) would do me.

The first thing I noticed upon arrival was that this box accepts component inputs, if you have (or buy) the correct component cable for your consoles you get considerably better image quality this way. If I had known the box could do this I would have ordered the cables at the same time. Using the composite cable the image quality is as good as can be expected, the box is doing a fine job.

Reading the included manual I also noticed a second nice surprise, it is HD ready. The top end modes supported are 720p and 1080i. Considering that most computer monitors are very high resolution (by TV standards) it is wonderful to be able to make use of this.

Installation was very simple, as soon as the cables were plugged in there was output on the screen. The on screen display is very helpful, not that I have used it much as I was playing games within 15 seconds.

The built in speaker is useful, but not the best quality. The box has a line out which I plugged into my stereo and now it sounds great and I can still use the box's remote control for volume adjustments and mute.

All in all this box is fantastic, combine it with an old monitor and some speakers and you have a great HDTV set up, and is about as complicated to install. It does do PC pass through so you could also turn your every day monitor into a TV without having to switch cables all the time.

Very Poor TV Tuner1
I bought 2 of these becuase they support widescreen. They were meant to replace my current V-Stream TV box, but are so bad they'll sit and gather dust.

The TV Tuner has so much Humm and Buzz after tuning the channel in that it's simply unusable and the TV picture is nowhere near as good as the older V-Stream unit I have. Onboard Speaker (as expected) is hopeless and suffers the same problem with Humm.

In addition, the instructions are very poor. You must change the Sound Sys setting from default D/K to I before you auto tune or you end up with Hiss instead of sound and have to swap the setting for each channel. Is there any mention of this in the instructions - course not.

The external cable that they boast about has no instructions on how to feed in another device using standard Red, white & Yellow RCA Composites. For Info: the audio red & white composite go to the device Pink & white connectors and the Yellow video composite goes to the green device connector and then select A/V.

The external feed does not suffer the sound problems, so it is definitely the TV Tuner option that is the problem.

If you simply want to use this to connect a DVD player, Console, etc then it will be fine - use as a TV Box forget it. My only option will be to feed in a TV signal to the A/V from a Video/Digital TV box and use its TV Tuner 'cos the imbedded one is useless.

No feedback from seller. Find another TV Box and seller.

Perfect for what I needed, but maybe lacking for others.4
I've noticed there are a range of reviews for this product here, so I thought I would add my two cents as it were.

First of all I was pleasantly surprised to see how small the box was, measuring only 14.5 x 10 (approx). I planned to use this for my Super Nintendo (via aerial input) and Playstation2.

I already have a TV Tuner card in my PC and this played my SNES with some lag (roughly 1 second). However, the Gadmei box plays it perfectly. The graphics are slightly blurred if you sit close to your monitor, but if you are a reasonable distance away (i.e. 3/4 the length of the controller) then it is comparable to a TV.

With the SNES playing well, I tried the PS2. You may notice that the PS2 has three pins, yellow (video) and red/white (for audio), however the Gadmei's corresponding inputs are red, white, blue, pink and green. After connecting the red/white inputs, all you have to do here is plug the yellow PS2 input into the Gadmei's green input and choose 'Video' as the source and all is well. I tested a few games and there is no lag present at all, however the same graphics issue from the SNES applies to the PS2 (just a mild annoyance, nothing more and non-existant from a distance).

For the sake of this review I did try the TV Tuner, and I found this to be a bit fuzzy and not a good substitute for a TV. However, I have a Hauppauge HVR-1300 which performs the job as a TV Tuner perfectly.

Regarding your PC, you can easily toggle between PC/Console just by using the power button on the remote. Also, this box only uses VGA, so if you have a DVI-only video card, you will need to get a DVI-VGA adaptor. Assuming you already have a VGA-VGA cable (male/female) you do not need to purchase any cables to fully use this product.

There is also a 'pip' feature, which allows you to play a console/watch TV in a small box on your desktop whilst working, but as toggling between the two inputs is an ease, I do not find myself using this feature.

All in all, this box is perfect for connecting any sort of consoles (ancient ones that use aerial input and newer ones with AV input) and using your PC at the same time, but users may have to sacrifice DVI input. People wanting a product solely for TV purposes may want to look elsewhere however. Based on my experience with my interal TV-Tuner card, I would reocomment Hauppauge.
