Editorial Reviews

From the Author
Still as valid today as when it was written!
When I was approached by Dorling Kindersley to create this book, I was really excited about the whole concept behind the series. Not only were they trying to cover a wide range of popular sports and enable readers to do what the title says, but they had a dramatically new approach. We first decided on the content of each of the double-page spreads, then spent several weeks shooting all the photos and creating all the drawings, and only then did I sit down to write the words. The brief was very specific, and the result is a book which has translated easily into almost a dozen different langauge versions. The most rewarding thing for me is the fact that I've seen the book everywhere from the shelves in a French supermarket to the chart table of a yacht in Hong Kong Harbour, and I hope it continues to enthuse people for years. Enjoy it, and e-mail me with your comments!

Customer Reviews

Excellent companion book for RYA Level 1 & 2 Courses4
This book is a slim volume that covers the fundamental aspects of dinghy handling for the beginner. As a primer in the sport, the book largely consists of very clear diagrams and pictures. The textual content is short and to the point, so I would recommend this book if you are actively involved in learning to sail and just want the core concepts in a nutshell to act as a review of what you have learnt on a sailing course. For more in-depth information into the scientific / technical reasons why boats behave in the water the way they do and their general dynamics, look elsewhere. All in all, short and sweet; it does exactly what it says on the tin.

An excellent Publication5
An excellent publication, and the one book that we recommend to all our participants on our initial sailing courses. The book provides all the necessary information on the basic sailing terminology and provides clear instructions for the basic sailing manoeuvres.

Excellent guide for a boating novice5
Wonderfully well-illustrated with detailed full-colour pictures - and succinctly captioned by a sailing enthusiast and expert. Gives 12 topics to grasp and, with some first-hand practical experience, you should then be able to cast off confidently and above all safely. It is surprisingly complex but always well explained. The instruction is mainly concerned with the dinghy sailor, but the principles are also relevant to bigger boats. The author does not forget those of us who are recreational sailors rather than competitive. The book is compact, concise and comprehensive.
