Main Holiday Season Only
Armed with the "2009 Alan Rogers France" we set off in our motorhome in March 2009 only to find that the book does not offer many resorts open outside of April/May - September, quelle horreur!
Fabulous book for the main summer season although it would be best to book in advance as most of the sites only have limited places for touring holidaymakers and my guess is that they would be full the majority of the peak season time.
In effect, a great book for planning your holiday from the comfort of your own home but not a great companion out of season or on a freelance tour.
Alan Rogers France 2009: Quality Camping and Caravanning Sites (Alan Rogers Guides)
I have been camping in France for many years now and was looking for a publication that was up to date and offered a wide variety of campsites. Unfortunately this book focused on the more expensive, non municipal and busy tourist sites which were very often over priced and overrun with children. France has numerous well laid out sites with "hedged off" pitches and excellent sanitary facilities which were excluded from the book. I would advise anyone travelling in France to be more discerning and try to head for these well maintained municipal sites in the villages and towns as they offer much better value for money. One book which I found to be more comprehensive and realistic in their pricing was Camping France 2009 (Michelin Camping Guides).
Very helpful
We have just come back from a month touring round France with a tent (May/June) and we found this guide very valuable. We have two young children and so have very specific requirements - we need heated swimming pools, cheapish costs, clean facilities, close beaches, etc. The Alan Rogers guide helped us to find suitable campsites really quickly and easily. It was also quite good at giving an overall flavour of the area and indicating what might be worth visiting/doing. Occasionally we weren't quite as enthusiastic as the reviewers about a particular site, although the hits were much more frequent than the slight misses.
I have a few minor complaints: (1) Sometimes the charging information was incomplete - in particular, charges for children were sometimes omitted and when you are travelling with 2 young children this can make a big difference to the overall cost of a site (2) We really did need to know whether the pools were heated or not, and this information was not consistently provided (3) As others have commented, the book does not make it terribly easy to find all the campsites in a particular area, although I got better at this with practice.
Overall, we found this book great for travelling around early in the summer season because everywhere was open but no where was full and we could just turn up. However, I am sure we will also make use of it in future years for pre-booking sites during school holidays. It may not be perfect, but it's pretty good.
