Synopsis
A ribald and rowdy romp through the mansions and taverns of Georgian England. Henry Fielding's fallen hero bed-hops his way out of a good home and almost into a hangman's noose, via a series of misadventures and misunderstandings. This big budget production boasts a strong supporting cast featuring the likes of June Whitfield and John Sessions.
Customer Reviews
Superb BBC dramatisation!
I have been waiting for this production to come along on DVD for some while - having owned it on VHS. It is BBC drama at it's very best - the production values are of the highest order. Casting and acting are all superb. Brian Blessed is born to the role of Squire Western - a virtuosi performance in fact (to the point of overacting!). To that I must add the wonderful Kathy Burke as Sophie's maidservant, Honour; who virtually steals the show from Samantha Morton. The pace of the story never flags and the outside locations are absolutely gorgeous. Using John Sessions as 'Henry Fielding' who often pops up to add comments or details to advance the storyline is a stroke of genius - especially as he appears to be mostly invisible to the rest of the characters - adding to the comedy... Highly recommended - I can't imagine it being done any better!
wonderful adaptation of novel
superb adaptation of the book, wonderful performances, gorgeous costumes and period settings. Bawdy and great fun. Unafraid to use some of the dialogue in the book, which most literary period pieces are now, which adds so much to the enjoyment. First class all round. Brian Blessed is a absolute joy.
Finally!
Finally! It's on Region 2 DVD at last! I have been waiting a long time and finally I have bought it.
This is one of the best TV Dramas of a long time. I remember it a long time ago - ten years ago (cripes) and I loved it. We had it on DVD and I've seen it so often they're a bit ropey now so I am more then pleased.
This is quite different to most BBC dramas you might be used to - it has a bouncy robust storyline full of good humour and brilliant acting from a top cast including Max Beesely (Bodies) and the pretty Samantha Morton (The Minority Report, The Libertine).
I'd truly reccomend this one to you as one of the very best dramas the BBC have ever made. I look forward to watching it again!
