Synopsis
Louis Trevelyan's refusal to trust his wife, Emily, destroys their marriage and drives him to insanity. He forces her out of their house, hires a seedy private detective to spy on her and kidnaps their son - with devastating consequences. Meanwhile, Emily's sister Nora causes uproar when she decides to marry for love rather than wealth; and the local curate, who possibly has the most complex love life of all, proposes to not one woman, but three.

Customer Reviews

A stunning production5
Having seen this production on TV, I eagerly awaited the DVD and was not disappointed. The series was shot in my home city of Wells, on and around the Cathedral Green, and many of the locations are very familiar (it did a very good job for advertising the beauties of the surrounding area of Somerset, and the city, Englands smallest, itself!) The story starts happily enough - a young couple, starting married life, in Victorian society, but the husband soon becomes suspicous that his pretty wife is not being faithful to him. Is he right, or is he wrong? He sets out to prove that he has has been cuckolded by her, therefore destroying all that he holds dear. I recommend this DVD to all because it is not only a stunning production, but a really good, involving story, based on a little known, very large classic novel, and the cast is superb. Listen for the cathedral bells ringing out too - magical, filling the air with music, combining with beautiful costumes, the acting which is second to none, and a cracking good story and you get your value for money. Brilliant.

Quality Right Through5
This production is quality through and through. It tells Trollope's tale of a young man and woman and their child, whose happiness is permanently blighted by what amounts to his neurotic and indeed paranoid obsession that his wife is having an affair with an old friend of her father. The plot is given extra piquancy by the fact that the old friend, a retired colonel and MP, is a rake and roue who fails to show sensitivity to the situation. In time, the marriage collapses and in the end the husband goes downhill mentally and in every way. Yet at the end, he still "knew he was right"...Recommended.

English subtitles included5
It's important to point out that DVD includes English subtitles which is very useful for English learners
