Carry On Films Vol 3
This Carry On Film Box set of 4, vol 3, is a good watch with all of the family, and if you remember the old days as i do, the adult humour and laughter is just the same
It also makes you want to watch the other box sets 1,2,and 4 too.
Want to see Sidney James play a character called Vic Flange?
Four Carry On films from the early 1970s which are linked by their contemporary setting, and by the way in which they all reflect the changing Britain in which they were made. Gone is the pantomime innocence of the crew's earlier, costume classics; these later films are loaded with smutty jokes, revolve solely around sexual stereotyping, and cast a beady eye on the new `permissive society'...
Probably the funniest and most watchable of the four is Carry On Matron, set in and around a maternity hospital, though it is a step down from the team's previous medical-based efforts. Sidney James is a crook looking to mount a drugs raid on the hospital, Kenneth Williams plays a doctor who thinks he's turning into a woman, and Hattie Jacques is for once centre stage as (of course) the `Matron' on the title. Carry On At Your Convenience is possibly the series defining film; being based around the activities of a toilet factory, the bodily functions-based humour is in full flow. However, it was one of the least successful of all the Carry Ons, poking fun at the Trade Unions and suffering from a distinct lack of interest from the working class core audience as a result. Carry On Abroad came out just as `package deal' foreign holidays were taking off in a major way, and sees the team on a disastrous trip to the Spanish island resort of `Elsbels', whilst Carry On Loving is the weakest of the four, using a bogus dating agency as the basis for a almost plotless effort in which various romantically inept men and sexually desiccated women try to get it on.
As always with the Carry Ons, these efforts can count on the regulars (especially Williams) to have you chuckling at the weak gags and contrived situations, but the contemporary-set films are nothing like as creative or satisfying as the best period pieces or genre spoofs, and as a result often seem far more dated.
