An improvement from the basic version?
I was quite sceptical about this game - being used to the standard version of risk with infantry, calary and cannon pieces, I was a bit unsure about this updated version.
First up, the arrow pieces do work to an extent. Its a lot clearer than the pieces...although....not half as fun! (I miss being able to set my pieces in formation....)
For those who are familuar with the standard version of risk:
- The board is much better laid out with updated terrorites (such as Russia, South East Asia, Central Africa and Eastern Cannada). Also features a new attack route: Middle East to East Africa....
- Features actual capital pieces. Capitals now provide an extra reinforcment per one held!
- Cities...an exciting new addition...Cities provide extra reinforcemants every 3 cities held grants you an extra reinforcement like so: you hold 13 terriorites and 2 cities...making 15 divided by 3 makes 5 reinforcments in total....certainly adds more tatcics to the game
- Objectives, major and minor objectives...capture Asia, conquer 10 terriorites per turn etc etc...you get rewards for completing an objective such as an extra tactical move, a tactical move BEFORE your turn, an extra dice etc...adding even more tactics into the game.
- The cards now have a star value (either 1 or 2 stars)...you can build up the cards increasing the star value. a star value of 2 will give you 2 reinforcements, a value of 5 will give you 14 reinforcements...a value of 10 will give you 30 extra reinforcements....do you trade in your set now? or wait until you get more cards to increase your value?....hmmm
- Attacks seem to be tactical...no more hug armies of 15 men vs 13 in this one. It seems (that due to added tactical features such as cities) the game ends up normally: 5 men vs 2 or 3 men vs 1...lower numbers....its better that way I think...
My only grippes are:
1) The 3 games is a slight overstatiment...the first game type is a trainning version which gives you a preset board lay out which severly lack playablity...On The other hand, there is scope to modify the game the main game to suit you...do you want to play with cities? with objectives? with capitals etc?
2) the rules (although brilliantly laid out) shows just how complex risk is/has become.
In all, I recommend this game...the added features are really cool... and there's nothing stopping you using the same old pieces from your old classic version of the game!!! A lot more tactics...and actually...quite addictive!
Another re-design for the world's greatest proprietary board game
Ever since playing this with my cousins and brother back in the 1960s, I've always thought this the greatest'Waddingtons' board game of them all. But of course it's not made by Waddingtons any more.
Over the decades the game has been updated, to persuade me to buy another copy. In the 1980s, the Parker Brothers variant introduced Objective cards whose content you only disclosed at the moment you were claiming a win. For this new version, the idea of objectives have been retained, but all players can see them, and you only receive the objective when you've actually achieved it. We need not bother with all the film tie-in versions: Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Transformers, Star Wars etc.
I like it. As other players have observed, the game is over more quickly than previous versions, although set-up can take a long time, particularly the introductory game. My biggest gripe is with the arrow pieces which are not an improvement over the plastic triangles, blocks and beads in earlier variants. I can see that the arrow metaphor works well as an idea, but in practice they're a bit of a bugger to pick up.
The game retains the world map of the original, along with the same continental values -- which means that North America still has an unnatural advantage, and Asia is rarely captured until close to the end of the game. However the game does travel in different directions compared to the original version where world conquest was the only objective. In particular, you need to protect your capital. Hanging on to this is even more important than blockading all the entry points to your continent.
This is Risk Black Ops, a very different beast to the old Risk game
To anyone who hasn't noticed, Risk has changed.
The new version of Risk (2008) is the production of the experimental underground hit Risk Black Ops.
Hasbro have listened to the comments and criticisms of the old game, and have revamped and renewed this title, and I must say, the work has paid off.
The new game is based on missions - major and minor missions.
These missions are laid out on the board, so everyone can see them, and they are up for grabs for everyone.
The first person to get three missions wins the game.
The effect of the new mission structure is to accelerate the game play significantly. I play Risk a lot with my mates, and it was very common for a game to last 3 or 4 hours if a virtual stalemate was acheived.
Not so with this new version. Games now rarely exceed 3 turns - one or two hours gameplay at the most.
The revision of the missions, plus some cool rewards for the major missions (extra attack die, extra defence die, air bases, etc.), and also the introduction of cities and capital cities, has re-energised this game.
All of these new innovations give the game a much more dynamic and 'fun' feel, but at the same time preserve the spirit of the original.
