Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
You could argue that Jagged Little Pill is the commercialised face of grunge. You could argue that Morrisette is just a cynical businesswoman, courting controversy with a few carefully placed, risqué references. You could even argue that this whole angst-rock is just a comfort-blanket for the therapy-generation. But it's still hard to argue that Jagged Little Pill isn't a great album. After all, it's the perfect alternative/mainstream crossover. There's "You Oughta Know", which marries its vitriolic, explicit narrative to thunderous, airbrushed grunge. With references to oral sex, Middle America were shocked, but not quite offended: it sold by the truckload. There's "Ironic", where Morrisette laments the trials that face every housewife ("there's ten thousand spoons / when all you need is a knife") to a scream-along, mosh-friendly chorus. The simple truth is, on Jagged Little Pill, the Canadian-born Alanis Morrisette does a very good job of being America's Everywoman. --Louis Pattison

Jagged Little Pill
The first time I ever came across Alanis was when I saw the video for "You Ought Know" on VH1 and loved it instantly! I never know who sang the song until my friend bought this CD and told me that I would love this!
And there's where my love addiction and my obsession for Alanis began! I can't express how much I love this album it is one of my all time favourites and even 13 years on I still listen to this record!
If you don't own this album you are missing out and I can't highly recommend this album enough! Lyrically this one of the best album ever! Alanis is a musical genius here lyrics are very clever, witty and catchy!
I love all the songs on this album and listen all the way through from Track 1 to Track 13 the hidden track!
1. All I Really Want - A great opening track that sets the mood for the rest of the album. A big chorus which Alanis sings her heart out and nice subtle sounds of the harmonica in the background! 4/5
2. You Ought Know - A brilliant track with excellent lyrics about seeking revenge on an ex-lover! An angst-ridden song that puts Avril Lavigne to shame! A rockier track on the album and one of the best! 5/5
3. Perfect - A bit of a softer tone compare to the first 2 tracks! A song about not being good enough unless you're perfect! One of the more depressing songs on the album but still good! Alanis vocals are "perfect" on the song though! 3/5
4. Hand In My Pocket - One of the album's highlights and one of my favourites! Lyrically one of the best and shows of Alanis brilliant song writing skills! Great use of the harmonica again! Brilliant! 5/5
5. Right Through You - In the same vein as "All I Really Want" a rockier track with a big chorus! A catchy track which is full of angst that really showcases Alanis' raw vocals! 4/5
6. Forgiven - One of the slower tracks on the album! A great song about religion and being forgiven! A great middle verse and the whole song is brilliant song by Alanis! 4/5
7. You Learn - My favourite song on the album! Lyrically one of Alanis best songs ever! Sung brilliant and has Alanis trademark all over it! I have overplayed this song over and over! And I still love it! 5/5
8. Head Over Feet - One of the album's highlights and another favourite of mine! One of the slower and softer songs on the album! Fantastic lyrics and beautifully sung! 5/5
9. Mary-Jane - I didn't like this song at first but it definitely grew on me and now is one of my favourites! Alanis vocals are top notch again and the song is beautifully arranged! - 4/5
10. Ironic - The most popular and well known track on the album! The most pop sounding one! Some of Alanis best lyrics and one of the most sing-a-long and catchiest song on the album! 5/5
11. Not The Doctor - My second favourite track on the album! Shame it wasn't released as a single as it has radio-friendly written all over it! A great song to sing-a-long too and great lyrics! 5/5
12. Wake Up- A dark and haunting song that is brilliant sung by Alanis! I really like the tone in Alanis voice on this song! Not my one of my favourites on the album but listenable! 3/5
13. (Hidden Track) - Your House - A perfect way to finish the album! Sung A cappella by Alanis and she has never sounded better! A powerful track that works wonderfully sung a cappella! 5/5
All the songs were written by Alanis and produced by Glen Ballard this album really pushed Alanis into the public eye and it is easy to see why this album has sold 30 million copies worldwide!
Like I said this one of my favourite albums of all time and Alanis is one of my favourite artists ever! Everything about this album is perfect - wonderful lyrics which showcase Alanis amazing song-writing ability and Alanis voice is perfect on every track from the softer side of her voice on the slower songs to raw vocals on the rockier songs! Alanis is one of the few artists that can sing with emotion and it comes across well on her songs!
Every song is arranged brilliant and creatively this one of the best albums in history! Alanis really re-defined the 90's with this album and really paved the way for the female singer-songwriter genre! Lyrically Alanis is one of the best female singer writers alongside Kate Bush & Tori Amos!
I was teenager when this came out and it really spoke out to me! And I'm my early twenties now and I still love it! If you own this album you know how fantastic it is and if you don't your really in for a treat!
Don't be put of the fact it maybe an angst-sounding record as this is really a treasure - This album can appeal to any fan of rock, pop etc as the songs are that good! If you appreciate true talent! This is a must-have!
Better than the best
Alanis Morissette is a brilliant artist, although Jagged Little Pill has to be her best album to date. With songs such as "Mary Jane" and the famous "Ironic", it's a real sing-along CD which never gets old! A Must-Buy for all music lovers!
Jagged Little Pill - The Best!
I have all Alanis Morrisette's CD's and I would say that this is definetly the best one.
So if you want to buy any of her cd's get this one or the collection instead.
