whats so bad about feeling down?
This is one of the best albums I have heard in my life, and I have heard alot.
Their first album is awesome, the first record is alot more somber and a little cathartic, in a good way - there's a strange beauty in sadness. But this album is incredible. It's a grower. From the very first time I heard this, its grown on me. I love every single lyric, break, riff, rythm.
Its very much a developement in their more aggressive direction, I love every single second, I find it amazingly life affirming and empowering.
The lyrics to this cd are amazing, and the way they are sung carries a strong beauty.
This band stand to be my favourite in a long list of bands.
Buy this. Feel good.
Above Average
Benton Falls are one of my recently discovered treasures from the Deep Elm record lable. Fighting Starlight their first album was inspired but somehow this album failed to deliver the same high standard. Dont get me wrong it is still a great album and i would recomend it to anyone. I agree with the previous reviewer in their comments on the change in style and you can certainly hear the influence of the new guitarist. I dont believe that the album looses anything towards the end but it does get more and more average sounding.
If you like Benton Falls then check out other Deep Elm records bands such as Pop Unknown, Lewis, Seven Story (Mountain) and early Saves The Day.
Interesting second album from Benton Falls
I had immense difficulty in deciding what to give this album for a rating due to the fact that at times this album is absolute genius but unfortunatley tails off leaving the listener wanting.
Benton Falls unleash an absolute salvo in the form of the first five tracks with "This Household Could Kill" and "The Race To Die" in particular showing the heavier side of Benton Falls. This is undoubtabley the influence of Benton Fall's new guitarist after the original one departed after making their debut ("Fighting Starlight", which I highly recommend). However, beyond these five tracks Benton Falls seem to relax just a little too much creating a stark difference in style between the end of the album and the beginning. It's not like tracks 6-10 are bad, they are far from it with "Beneath the Ashes In Lies" in particular showing that Benton Falls are still interested in finishing an album in style. The last tracks just seem to fit a little too snuggly into the emo/post-hardcore category with Benton Falls losing a bit of their more creative vibes.
For a second album and with a new guitarist Benton Falls' sound is changing and in a good way. This album is the second outing from a good band who with time should gel into a lean, mean rocking machine who will hopefully continue to contest the boundaries placed on them by their genre.
An interesting and exciting album.
