Grace Ellerington has met the man of her dreams. But her friends think he's a total nightmare. When Grace and Stuart announce their engagement, Olivia, Tanya and Louis feel duty bound to save Grace from making the biggest mistake of her life. And they'll try anything to make her see sense - bribery, corruption, copious amounts of alcohol, kidnap...Amid these high jinks, Ollie, who runs her own bistro in Battersea, finds herself at the mercy of a ruthless (though incredibly good-looking) property developer who's just threatened to put a rather large fly in her soup. And, to top it all, he happens to be one of Stuart's best mates...

What an unpleasant experience
Split Ends is the story of four close friends: Olivia/Ollie (a stroppy, incompetent restaurant owner), Tanya (a fashion victim/nymphomaniac), Louis (a campy, OTT gay guy), and Grace (the only halfway-sane one of the bunch). When Grace finds herself a boyfriend, Stuart, whom her snotty, shallow friends find boring and un-cool (because he doesn't go club-hopping and drink himself unconscious every night), they spare no effort to split up the happy couple, including a hefty dose of laxatives in the unsuspecting Stuart's chocolate cake. If this sort of sophomoric and cruel humour has you chortling, this is just the book for you. Otherwise, give this one a miss.
Ugh, not what I expected.
Boy, was I disappointed. Admittedly this is the first book of hers I have read... so, I'll give her another chance!
Basically I thought this book was really underwritten and lacked any creative flair. It's extremely predictable and juvenile. Who would go to such lengths to sabogtage a BEST friends relationship to SUCH a point? Ugh, the main character (Ollie-Olivia) is a coward. She will not confront her friend about the relationship and explain her reservations. When she royally screws up the relationship for real she doesn't even own up to it after the fact. Rotten high school behavior, if I wanted to read or hear this I could have visited my local secondary school.
Skip this book. Maybe try another one of her books if you are interested.
Not a fun Harvey read
After enjoying Harvey's previous books, I was disappointed by Split Ends. This was primarily due to the one-dimensional personalities of the main characters. They were conniving and snobbish, and thoroughly unlikable ... making it difficult to read the whole thing through. Interestingly, the male characters were more pleasant than their female counterparts, and therefore made it possible to finish. There was the obligatory ending, but Harvey didn't even attempt to make the relationship more than skin deep. All in all, seems a poor effort.
