A most exciting new Cornish title5
This is a Marvellous book. This book is the closest thing available to an encyclopaedia of Cornwall and it contains so many fascinating details of general knowledge about Cornish culture.
As the title suggests here we have every possible phrase containing the word 'Cornish'. The obvious examples are Cornish pasty and Cornish wrestling but there are so many unfamiliar phrases like the Cornish duck (the pilchard) and the Cornish rex (a breed of cat) not to mention Cornish pine (a variety of apple). There are also a few supplements which contain the word 'Cornish' when it appears after another word e.g. Unified Cornish ( a form of the Revived Cornish Language) and Rock Cornish (a breed of poultry). Another supplement/appendix lists phrases with the word 'Cornishman' like the Cornishman's gift (an unwanted gift). In the course of the entries so many unkown details are included about the folklore, history, language and dialect of Cornwall as well as entries on famous Cornish people etc.. This book was obviously a labour of love and it is truly a browser's delight. Apart from the Cornish people (who will love this dictionary), this collection will also be enjoyed by anyone who loves learning words and phrases and discovering new and unrecorded eponyms, toponyms, untranslateable words as well as interesting pieces of trivia. I am only half way through this book but I have already learnt so much. It is also well cross-referenced and is accompanied by a full bibliography. I have placed it in the most prominent position on my bookshelf next to my Cornish- English dictionary and it is just as useful.
