Stan and Ollie inherit a South Sea island from Stan s late uncle and journey to the island in the company of a stateless chef and a stowaway. They are shipwrecked on route and end up on another island, later to be christened Atoll K. This island is found to be rich in uranium and, in an effort to prevent the super powers squabbling over this rich paradise, declare it Crusoe Land and elect Ollie as President. Ollie is soon thrown out of office and is set to be hanged, along with Stan. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Stan and Ollie), a storm sends Atoll K sinking into the sea and the boys eventually find their island, where all of their possessions are claimed by the taxman. The last film Stan and Ollie made after five years in effective retirement, this has been variously released as Atoll K, Robinson Crusoe Land and the more familiar Utopia.

Synopsis
In UTOPIA, the last film Laurel and Hardy made together, Stan and Ollie fly to London for the reading of Stan's late uncle's will. After Stan's uncle's cash is used to pay the solicitors, death duties, and tax, the only things left are a yacht--and a South Sea island. At the docks, the duo get their new boat, along with a displaced sailor and a stowaway. Together, the four set sail but are soon shipwrecked on an atoll during a storm. There they meet a French singer who is escaping her fiancee. When her annoying husband-to-be turns up unexpectedly, he discovers the area to be rich in uranium and soon everyone the land. Hilarious hijinks ensue...

Not even a good beermat
I'd heard that this last movie of Laurel and Hardy's was their worst, and also rather sad to watch because Stan is obviously ill, but I was curious to see it anyway and found this Elstree Hill edition on sale.
I watched the first three or four minutes then threw it away - not because the film was so bad but because the transfer quality was by far the worst I've ever seen. If you pointed an early 80s video camera at a 15 inch tv screen without focusing it properly first you would get comparable results. I don't exaggerate - you can't even make out the faces on a waist shot. It's beyond belief that anyone would market such a poor product and expect even the least discerning buyer to be satisfied, even if they gave it away with cornflakes. This has put me off buying any disc by Elstree Hill as they clearly don't care about the technical quality of their products. I can't recommend the movie itself one way or the other but if you want to check it out, buy a different edition, not the Elstree Hill disc.
