Eric Dolphy was one of the vanguard of the 1960s jazz avant-garde, yet he never totally severed his ties with tradition. He had an energetic, vocalised approach to the alto sax and the bass clarinet, and a lovely, crystalline, classically influenced tone on flute. OTHER ASPECTS is a collection of previously unreleased music from Dolphy's private collection of tapes. It gives a fascinating taste of what Dolphy might have done had he lived.
The two versions of "Inner Flight" are lovely, probing excursions for solo flute. "Jim Crow",featuring an unnamed female singer, is a dark, chilling collage of some of Dolphy's influences, from 20th century European/American classical music (he often worked with composer Gunther Schuller), to jazz's African, Caribbean, and blues roots. Accompanied by a tabla drummer and a tamboura player, "Improvisation and Tukras" documents Dolphy's interest in and exploration of North Indian raga form. OTHER ASPECTS is not the ideal album for the Dolphy neophyte (try MEMORIAL ALBUM or OUT TO LUNCH), but it's a must for hardcore fans.
