A gripping thriller that had me checking dark corners
This came on TV late at night, and my girlfriend and I thought 'Great! Another B-movie'. But we watched it, and ended up gripped to the TV and hiding behind cushions. It ended up being a film that we both haven't forgotten, and that I have only just tracked down.
OK so it has none of the postmodern humour or big name stars that we have come to expect, but it superbly plays on your fears and has you checking the room before turning out the lights. One particular point to note is the opening twenty minute scene with a babysitter being called by the prowler outside. The opening of scream with the demise of Drew Barrymore has nothing on this - even though it is evident where the idea may have come from.
It is an underated thriller that I will not demean by labelling a classic. It is a film of raw fear, and if thats what you look for, then stop searching.
superb thriller of the best type
I'd recommened this film to anyone who likes 'edge of your seat' thrillers.Great performances all round from a decent cast and fine direction from fred walton, who knows just how to put across this kind of fare.
I used to have the vhs version of this by the same company and the picture quality was a bit below average. The dvd looks as though it's taken from the same master, although obviously somewhat improved, and there's only a chapter selection, but for a budget disc... it's nothing to really bother about.
One of the best films in the world
One day i was going to have a sleepover and i asked my mother if she knew any good scary films and she said "there was one i watched ages ago about a man hiding in the attic and it was really scary" so i said "what's it called" and she said "the postman knocks twice or something." i knew that that wasn't it so i forgot about it. A few months later i was on Amazon looking for things for christmas and i was looking at a scary film and i read something like "not as good as 'When a Stranger Calls' and i thought that sounds like that film my mother was on about. I checked it out and sure enough it was. This film is amazing. the tension builds so much you just want to explode. The musical score is creepy and Carol Kane is an amazing actress. The first 30 minutes are probably the most famous in film history with 'Scream' totally ripping it off. I have to admit that the middle does get extremely boring with a slight bit of tension. The end is the most amazing end to a film i've seen except Halloween 4, because that ending totally freaked me out. I watched this with my cousin and even she was scared, but she guessed the ending!! and i don't know how, because it's not obvious at all. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes films with tension, but not to people who like slasher horrors as there is hardly any blood.
