Customer Reviews

A must for all Leica friends5
Leica users seems to be in the habit of bying almost everything which is published about Leica. Several authors respond to this demand by publishing book after book, which in practice adds nothing to what most Leica users already know. Many users may therefore expect that this new publication will add to this trend, but that is absolutely not the case. Put shortly, in my view this is the best book on Leica and Leica lenses published so far. Mr Puts has researched the topic in great debth, and page after page is filled with substantive information which will add to the knowledge of even the most experienced user. Practically every Leica lens, past and present, is critically reviewed, and Mr Puts does not join several other rather uncritical writers who praise absolutely everything Leica does. Every fact is carefully documented, and one cannot avoid the impression that there is serious work behind what is presented. The title is technical in content, and presents very interesting information on lens design, production and technological development over time. Mr Puts work is a very significant contribution, and will no doubt be referred to as the book on Leica lenses for years to come.

Critical reference on photo optics, not just for Leica5
Erwin Puts has invested a good part of a lifetime studying photographic optics in general and Leica lenses in particular. His Leica Lens Compendium is a critical reference book for the advanced photographer who wants to learn about lens technology, and especially for Leica owners who want the truth about the relative merits of every lens Leica ever made without the hype or the mysticism. Some fairly famous lenses come in for criticism, and some of us will find out that lenses we thought were unsurpassable are by today's standards merely very good.

There are a few surprises when he discusses lens quality and reviews famous landmark lenses.

The discussion of lens design problems, about one third of the book, should be required reading for every advanced photographer and is certainly the most accessible text of its kind I've ever seen.

Great book. Worth every penny, pound euro or dollar you have to pay for it.

On time and as described4
