Impressive.
One of the major problems in taking lots of photographs on a one or two GB card is ensuring that you carry enough power with you. Particularly when out and about, up a mountain or in the wilds. It is difficult to get to a battery charger. This bit of kit solves all those power problems and it makes the camera look better, more professional as well. The grip is supplied with a battery holder/magazine that takes two standard rechargeable camera batteries, enough for any expedition and full days shooting. It also comes with an extra battery magazine for AA bodies to give you even further back up.
Another of the problems I've found with the 350D, (and I've heard with the later 400D) is the small size of the body for someone, like me, with large hands. The grip also solves that problem.
When looking at shots of the grip on Amazon I felt it a little expensive. But when the grip arrived, the day after it was ordered, I was impressed with the quality of the build. It feels solid and well made, it feels sturdier than the actual camera. It is easy to fit and use, particularly with my mono and tripods, (another worry I had). It is very well balanced and it seems well suited to the jobs I have given it so far. Overall I am impressed and would advise purchase.
An Outstanding Add-on
I bought my partner a Canon EOS-350D for Christmas in 2005. She still uses it extensively regularly filling 1 and 2Gb Compact Flash cards and used to complain about the fact that the batteries always ran down. I was concerned and looked into the problem and was surprised to discover that the batteries were performing at an above average level - she was simply using the camera until it went flat. This christmas I purchased a BG-E3 Battery Grip through Amazon, and that along with an extra Canon NB-2LH battery has gone some way to resolving the problem - she still uses the camera until it runs flat, but now it lasts twice as long!
The grip itself is comfortable and easy to fit while providing additional controls to make for easier portrait type photographs - i.e. turning it on one side. From my own perspective, the addition of a grip made the camera easier for me to use due to my hand and finger size, and made the camera easier to hold and operate while wearing gloves (kind of a must up here on Shetland when you're photographing the great outdoors).
One thing I would stress though is that this grip does not come with any extra batteries so in order to populate the grip you'll need to add another NB-2LH (or compatible) cell.
A great add-on for the EOS-350D and one I heartily recommend.
a great - and I found necessary - add on.
Got this to go with my 350D. I'm new to photography but didn't have to be an expert to find that the 350D was too small for my grip. This takes care of it beautifully. The camera feels much safer when I hold it now - especially since I just bought a 55-200mm lens as well adding to the front weight.
When ordering, I assumed it just enlarged grip and held 2 batteries. Didn't really read the techs as, since it was from Canon, I didn't have to be convinced. However, imagine my delight when I found the grip had a whole array of buttons to mimic the camera layout. This allows you to shoot vertically without having to feel around. An excellent touch - well done Canon.
This product isn't a necessity unless the following applies:
Your find the camera a tad small to hold.
You use it a lot and require extra battery power.
You take a lot of vertical shots (this is a neat feature)
And, if you're decadant, you want the camera to look like a pro's.
I'm positive there are other reasons to have this. And, at the price on Amazon, it's up to [...] cheaper than shops. It may well be, that even if the above reasons don't apply, you might just want to invest in one because, above all, it does make photography more fun. Sounds daft, I know, but it really does.
Well done Canon - again.
