Amazon.co.uk Review
Ann Brashares' The Second Summer of the Sisterhood will be found equally riveting by the teens who loved The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001). As in the first novel, four teen girls who have known each other since birth (their moms shared a pregnancy aerobics class) further forge their bond of friendship through a pair of thrift-store jeans that magically, impossibly, fits them all perfectly.
Like the summer before, Carmen, Bridget, Tibby and Lena share their individual adventures with the Pants collective, creating an engaging, kaleidoscopic narrative of four voices. This summer, Tibby attends a film programme in Virginia and Bridget (Bee), whose mother has died, impulsively jets off to Alabama to get reacquainted with her estranged grandmother. Lovely Lena tries to protect herself from the heartbreak of loving her long-distance Greek-god boyfriend Kostos, and Carmen deals (poorly) with her mother dating again and having the nerve to borrow the Pants!
The Second Summer..., while breezy and fun to read, deals seriously with love lost and found, death and finding the courage to live honestly. The teens' lessons are often painful, but the Sisterhood prevails. Quotations from luminaries such as Charlie Brown ("Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love") to Nelson Mandela ("There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered") open each chapter and cleverly reflect the novel's many moods. awesome
its been a year since i read the sisterhood of the travelling pants so when i started reading this one i had forgotten some of the details etc from the previous novel but once i got started it all became familiar again.
this summer there are plenty of changes for the girls, mourning the loss of a loved one, new loves and in general growing up and all the pleasures and pitfalls that life throws at a teenage girl!!!!
i love the writing style of ann brashares with the quotes starting each chapter but also the mix of prose, letters and online instant messages, which how these girls would have related to each other.
super sisterhood!!!!!
This book is even better than the first 1 and i cudnt put it down!!! Before u read this review read the sisterhood of the travlling pants because itl a) ruin the first book and b) u wont understand it as well!
The Fab 4 r back!! bee, tibby, carmen and lena.
Tibby is devastated after the death of Bailey but in memory of her she decides to go to a movie college to improve her skills.
Bee whose summer ended horribly last year goes in search of her grandmother who she hasnt seen or spoken to since her mother past away, and is surprised to find a few old friends and hobbies that still appeal to her.
After meeting her dads new family last year, Carmen has now got her own boyfriend to think of, but on top of all that her mums showing a bit too much interest in a guy from work and Carmen doesnt like him.
Lena has mixed feelings about her guy, kostos who she hasnt seen in a while. But then she finds out that hes left greece, in fact he comes to her house! and she realises that all her feelings for him have come back.
but will it last? i guess youll just have to read it and see!!!
The sisterhood continues
After reading the first book in the sisterhood installment, I was worried that this one wouldn't be able to match the standard the previous had set out. But Ann Brashares has proved that the sisterhood will never die out.
The story picks up a year later, with the young women having to recover from so much. Tibby is still mourning the death of Bailey and trying to find herself at a film programme, while trying to distinguish who her real friends are. Bridget is also recovering from the painful experience she had last summer, and sets out to discover her roots and who she is destined to become at her grandmother's. Lena, whose relationship with Kostos was unable to survive the year, is trying to deal with loss and love, and Carmen finds history repeating itself when suddenly it's her mother's turn to find new happiness.
All the emotions and magic are still here from the previous summer, in an equally charming and lovable book as its predecessor. The sisterhood of the travelling pants will never grow old.
