A truly endearing story
This book is equally suitable for young readers and everyone young at heart. It is written with much affection for Silver Bush, based on the home of Montgomery's relatives where she spent many happy days and which still stands to this day. Montgomery's lively style, love for people and subtle sense of humour is represented hardly anywhere better than in this book. It follows Pat, a seven-year-old girl who hates any sort of change through to her teens, where she finally has to accept that things simply do not stay the same. On the way she encounters much heartache but also great love and support from those around her. In my opinion, the caring family environment gives the book a wonderfully comforting feel, and especially Jingles is one of the most endearing characters I have encountered in any books I know. A book I love to pick up again and again.
Montgomery's and Pat's lovely love for Silver Bush
Silver Bush is a totally lovely book by my fave writer LMM. It's about the little girl called pat, who loves her beautiful house Silver Bush more than anything. I think the book expreses LMM's love for the real Silver Bush in Park Corner, PEI, which was her realtives' palce and now a museum. I adore both the palce and the book!
The best of Canada's Lucy Maud Montgomery
As a child I read the Anne books by L.M. Montgomery but never read the books about Emily of New Moon or Pat of Silver Bush. I am now, at the age of 50-something making up for this and reading all of them. The latest one I have read is Pat of Silver Bush. Pat is a sweet little girl who hates change and the usual changes of life which we all face are extra hard for her to bear. This story charts her progress through her growing-up years with upheavals like a new baby sister, her aunt's wedding, and many other changes with friends and relatives, some tragic and some happy. Throughout Pat is helped by the wise and tough Irish family housekeeper, Judy Plum, whose character sketches of the locals are hilarious at times, eg. a woman who married beneath herself is described as 'taking her pigs to a poor market'. The other thing which sustains Pat is the beauty of her surroundings at Silver Bush farm and the descriptions of the plants, animals and seasons of this part of Prince Edward Island are enthralling. L.M. Montgomery's books made me want to visit Prince Edward Island and finally in 1999 I did. It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen and the descriptions in her book reflect it beautifully.
