Here is a wealth of expert advice and practical know-how, presented through a year in the gardening life of the man who was one of Britain's most famous and admired gardeners. Month by month this book displays Christopher Lloyd's unrivalled knowledge of plants – how he grew them in his celebrated garden at Great Dixter and how he designed his superlative plant combinations. This is also a book about experimentation, 'a strong element' of which Lloyd considered 'essential to the happiness of any enquiring gardener'. Laced with provocative statements to tease gardeners out of complacency, Christopher Lloyd's Gardening Year is essential reading for adventurous gardeners.

Review
His text is as well-observed and entertaining as ever (Stephen Anderton Times )
In this book the old master's hand is still as deft as ever, acquainting the reader with a procession of plant groups and their seasons with a style and zest that makes this as compulsive a read as any thriller (Garden )

The Guardian - review by Ruth Gorb, December 3 1999
"Read CHRISTOPHER LLOYD'S GARDENING YEAR and you are in the company of a master gardener and friend. In this latest book he is, as ever, chatty, opinionated and inspirational. He disobeys all the rules and wages a long-standing battle against good taste: his combination of orange dahlias and vivid purple verbena may not be your cup of tea, but he describes it with such zest...To be in his company, even through the pages of a book, is a privilege and an education"

Christopher Lloyd - yeah!!!
Any book by Christopher Lloyd is beyond price. He was born with a trowel in his hand and in over 80 years of life never stopped learning about plants and gardening. His own garden at Great Dixter was his research lab and he was constantly trying out new plants, plant combinations and gardening techniques. He was a plantsman first and foremost, rather than a garden designer - but then he didn't need to design the structure of the garden at Dixter, that had been done by the great architect Lutyens in consultation with Christopher Lloyd's father.
Yes, a great gardener. But even more than that he was a prolific and talented writer with a consummate command of English. There may have been greater gardeners in the 20th century (though not many) and there were greater writers, but no-one combined the two skills to such effect as Christopher Lloyd did. Buy this book and any other by him and you will learn and be entertained in equal measure.
The star rating on this site only goes up to five. I would give any book by Christopher Lloyd at least ten.
