Broad and interesting introduction.
This book is a broad introduction: occasionally repetitive, often rich and always very interesting. Key is the thematic structure employed which makes the book most suited to occaisonal rather than intensive reading - between topics the chronology leaps forward and back. Covering a wide sweep of Japanese societal, constitutional and economic history I found the book most stimulating where it addressed the interractions between the army, leftist-intelligensia and countryside/masses. Contrastingly the economic history is surprisingly sparse - arguably a refreshing change. It is probably fair to say that this book is most suited to those currently studying/knowledgeable of one facet of Japan, who desire a richer background. With this precise function in mind, it helped me enormously to grapple with wider issues.
