Discover Liverpool
There are lots of books on this remarkable City, but this is by far and away the best that I have seen in some years.
It is well written, and in an entertaining and clear style. As well as giving a readable and detailed history of the city, it gives so much information about the people, places, and buildings too. It is a combination of history book and tour book, because it is written as 8 separate, themed tours. But, if you don't want to use it this way, it just makes a great read. I found it easy to dip into, but friends of mine have read it like a novel!
As well as that, it comes with a DVD, which is made up of 8 short documentaries, which match the tours, but which bring the book and the city to life.
All-in-all, this is brilliant! And great value for money.

My Liverpool Soul
I bought this as a present for my mother who was born in Liverpool. It has given her hours of pleasure and she claims it is the best present she has ever received. A must for the Liverpool migrant who wants to retrace their roots from their Liverpool home.

Discover Liverpool
I have many books concerning the history of my Home Town, but none so readable as this one by Ken Pye. The great merit is the combining of historical fact with up-to-date (2007) tours of the area being reviewed.
After 50 years absence from Liverpool, although most of the major landmarks appear to be still there, I could not possibly find my way around the centre of the city today without the very full details in Ken Pye's directions. So much has changed over the last half-century.
The only slight drawback from this publication is the weight of the book.
It is printed on good quality paper with heavy hard covers, but not the sort of book you could comfortably read in bed, or take on holiday !
