Customer Reviews
A charming introduction to this legend, beautifully illustrated.
Many Scottish children's books are, in my opinion, either too international in flavour or too Scottish in that they may not be accessible to children south of the border (or in other English-speaking countries). Linda Strachan cleverly avoids these extremes by the device of including Rupert, a hedgehog from Kent, in her wee cast of characters, all of whom are cleverly drawn (pun intended, as the illustrations are colourful and engaging). Whenever a Scottish expression is used (occasionally) it has to be explained to Rupert. For good measure, there's also a glossary at the back of the book.
The adventure has a good dose of suspense in it, and there's a nice little twist at the end of the tale. All in all, it's a very pleasant way for children to learn about Scottish geography, language and the value of friendship. As an uncle, I highly recommend this book.
