Amazon.co.uk Review
The concept of the Sampled series is simple. Virgin have chosen a selection of contemporary dance and hip-hop hits, traced the samples used in them and presented them all in their original glory on a double CD. It's an easy process but like many simple ideas, it works. The first three in the series have offered some real gems, and this latest is also full of rarities, classics and curious oddities too. There are a few obvious tunes too, but if you want to hear the tracks behind the Happy Mondays' "Step On" (John Kongos' "He's Gonna Step On You"), Ice T's "You Played Yourself" (James Brown's "The Boss"), Royksopp's "So Easy" (Gals and Pals "Blue On Blue") Layo and Bushwacka's "Love Story" (Nina Simone's "Rags and Old Iron") or DJ Shadow's "Dark Days" (David McCallum's "House Of Mirrors"), this is the album for you. --Paul Sullivan
Customer Reviews
This series is now getting a bit 'thin'
Sampled Vols 1,2, & 3 are excellent, however this does come across as a bit of a barrel scraper.
Another brilliant album.
The "Sampled" series has proved to be an unbeatable source of rare classics sampled by recent stars. The 4th enstallment is excellent, not as good as Vol. 3 which was the best of the series, but again they have dug up some priceless treasures. Sly Stone's brilliant "Into my own thing", a surprisingly funky Joe Cocker, Herbie Hancock's "Wiggle Waggle", Linda Lyndell's "What a man", two lots of David Axelrod, are just a few of the many highlights. You may want to skip over Shirley Bassey's "Light my fire", however it is at least interesting. But you won't have your finger over the fast forward button for long.
Sampled do it again...
Another cracking collection in the Sampled series, if you have enjoyed any of the other three compilations in this collection you will NOT be disapointed – quality tracks with a few real gems.
