Alongside the Slog, the emergencies, and her developing sense of wonder, Hilary is also wrestling with belligerent and wonderful colleagues, true and false friends, the very mixed blessings of the nurses' hostel - and her feelings for a young man called Adrian.

Customer Reviews
Good read! Tiny part about midwifery, huge part about life!!
I really enjoyed this book.!!
The title is a bit misleading, as midwifery is only a tiny bit of the story!!
So if you are looking for a book all about whats its like to be a student midwife then this isnt the book for you.
However, if you want to read a book about life and its ups and downs and what its like to have a Christian faith in God then this is the book for you!! :o)
Disappointing buy
I bought this book because in a few weeks time I become a student midwife and I thought reading this would give me a bit of an insight into what to expect.
It did not.
The first few chapters were fab. Lots of info about life as a student. Then the book went to pot. No mention of midwifery, rather a preachy type of book in which the author talks a lot about God and her faith.
If you want to read about midwifery you will be very disappointed. My advice is don't bother.
Do not buy - misleading title
This book does not include enough on student midwifery to justify its title, so if like me you are a student midwife and thought you would find some solace in this book think again and don't buy it. It is simply a biography of how bad Hilary Cotterill's life was between qualifying as a midwife and having children (with very little on midwifery) and quite a depressing biography at that. I am a christian but I am also a firm believer that life it was you make it and you can't expect other people or beings to make it better for you. I found some areas of the book to be vague and inconsistent and the ending wasn't that much of a happy one. The recurring thought I had whilst reading the last quarter of the book was why doesn't SHE go back to work??? If you want a book on midwifery buy another and don't waste your money on this one.
