Amazon.co.uk Review
On One in a Million, Aaliyah expands on the smooth grooves of her massively successful debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number. The production and songwriting talents of Tim "Timbaland" Mosley and rapper Missy Elliott give the songs on One in a Million a seductive edge with laidback grooves and cool hip-hop licks; but what really makes this album is the full-grown singer at the controls. On the title track, a magical ballad, Aaliyah casts a cool spell with layered voices and a smokey delivery. With the assistance of Slick Rick Rick, she turns Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" into a funky hip-hop jam for the end of the millennium. While with "4 Page Letter," one of the album's high points, she intricately details the end of a love affair. Artists twice her age could only hope to create a work of such clarity and resonance. --Aidin Vaziri
CD Description
Aaliyah's debut paved the way for a legion of teen-aged female R&B singers, including Brandy, Monica and 702. Aaliyah is no kid, though; she sings with a maturity that belies her age. Much about her life has changed, but she remains a mature young lady who sings about the ups and downs of true loveexperiences on this follow-up record.
Obviously a trained singer, Aaliyah glides easily between vocal ranges. Her soft style is more refined than the over-exaggerated riffs of other R&B songstresses. As on her first album, she pays tribute to the Isley Brothers, this time with "Choosey Lover". She adds more old-school flavor with her remake of the MarvinGaye classic "Got To Give It Up".

Aaliyah's True Masterpiece
One in a million is exactly that, An R&B album in a million, EVERY last track is a classic... the title track "One in a million" is a smooth laid back tale of true love, a tune to play with the lights down low... Another song to stand out is the rework of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it up" It's been said of covers, either make them sound the same or TOTALLY different... no poor imitations and Aaliyah's smooth vocals along with some help from Slick Rick certainly makes this song appeal to those who weren't yet born when it orginally came out. "4 page letter" is another of this albums stand out songs although Aaliyah takes a break from the classic Timbaland "Beats" and trys her hand at a ballad... ONE IN A MILLION is truly Aaliyah's greatest album as well as an R&B Classic... this is the album that shaped Aaliyah's career as well as changing R&B..... totally one for your collection!!
Absolutley Amazing
This legendary album has now become a classic for all fans of soul, R&B, and even pop. Aaliyah's amazing talent and sweet, breathy vocals ensured its success, also contributed by its original signature style courtesy of legendary producer Timbaland and his partner in music Missy Elliot. The album is beautiful, and songs such as 'One in a Million' '4 Page Letter' 'If your Girl Only Knew' and 'Hot Like Fire' have now become anthems. Aaliyahs amazing talent is now legendary although at her time she should have got more mainstream coverage. Many female artists now seek to emulate the style and success of this album, and of Aaliyah.
Timbaland and Missy Elliots huge contribution to the style and sound of this album revolutionised R&B at the time with tripped beats and sassy production to be envied. Aaliyahs amazing ability to be sexy and street in both her vocals and personal style also ensured her success in areas away from music. Aaliyah took a bit of a break after this album, studying at college ,and shooting two films, 'Queen of the damned' and 'Romeo must die' before recording her critically acclaimed third album simply entitled 'Aaliyah'. She had also been offered a part in the Matrix sequels however was tragically killed in a plane crash in the bahamas just after finishing filming the video to 'Rock the boat'.
Aaliyah will always be remembered as a beautiful, humble artist with multiple talents and a singing voice never to be replaced. Her singing style was unique and distinctive as well as beautiful and this album should be bought. All the songs are great but my favourites are 'One ina million', '4 page letter' 'A girl like you' 'I gotcha back', 'The one I gave my heart to' and 'Never givin up'
Enjoy
something to really chill to
