A rumour has persisted in the vampire world of a dark slayer - mysterious, elusive and seemingly impossible to kill, she is the one hunter who strikes terror into the hearts of the undead. She is Ivory Malinov. Her only brethren, the wolves. Long ago betrayed by her people, abandoned by her family, Ivory has lived centuries without companionship or love. She has sustained her sanity by preparing for one purpose- to destroy her greatest enemy. Until the night she picks up the scent of a man, her unexpected salvation. Her lifemate. The curse of all Carpathian women. He is Razvan. Branded a criminal, detested and feared, he is a dragonseeker borne of one of the greatest Carpathian lineages, only to be raised as its most despised- and captive- enemy. Fleeing from his lifetime of imprisonment, Razvan now seeks the dawn to end his terrible existence. Instead he has found his deliverance in the Dark Slayer. In spirit, in flesh and blood, in love, and in war, Ivory and Razvan are made for each other. For as long as they dare to live.

Great Story - But.........
If like me you have read all the previous novels and have been waiting, not very patiently for "Dark Slayer" this book will not disappoint. I just had to read it in one sitting, and then go back again a few days later and re-read it to ensure I'd missed nothing. Hubby was very miffed, but..... ah well! The interaction between the two main characters is so beliveable given their backgrounds, and all credit to Ms Feehan for getting this one just right.
Ivory and Razvan have to be the strongest couple she has created, both have suffered unimaginable torment over extended periods and bear horrific internal and external scars. Both have been betrayed and both have been outcast by the Carpathian people. This story will grip you and, in Ivory, Ms Feehan has created, without doubt the bravest female heroine yet, This woman can kick some serious vampire and ancient Carpathian butt!!
So, why only 4*'s, well for me, and it is mostly personal, but I did have a problem with both some of the storyline and the book as a whole. Firstly, Ivory's history. I have, I believe a very good imagination, but the horrific events of when she was a young woman, and what happened next, stretched it to its limit. Secondly, the final showdown could have been so much more, and longer, it seemed to fall at the final hurdle. Finally, and this really is just a moan but the book is over 400 pages long - great, no, the last 40 pages are given over again to the Carpathian language, Carpathian chants and even Carpathian musical aesthetics. I wish Ms Feehan would write a separate book - an addendum to the whole series to cover this, some people may buy it, but its not for me.
This really is a good book, when all's said and done and a keeper, as they all have been.
Good story but a bit slow to progress overall arc
Whilst I must stress that I like this book and the concept; some 17 books, plus short stories, into the series, and the plot is still moving too slowly for my liking. I might be impatient (definitely) but I would like a bit of good news about the fate of the Carpathians soon please.
I was sorry that the conversion of Lara was only mentioned in passing as her story never felt properly finished to my way of thinking. I must also add my own gripe about the endlessly repeated appendices of carpathian chants, language, music etc.which eats into the actual story pages. To the author and publisher - please don't mislead us with book lengths that include these items - I would rather you be honest.
So good story, will definitely keep and continue with series. Just wondering how long it can go on for if we all want to see the stories of Skyler, the Aunts, Zacarias and these new warriors et al.
Finally :)
First off, this book is good, its not the best in the series but it has some originality and that makes up for some of the weaker parts of the book. Firstly Ivory is quite unique as the female protagonist. She is literally in the role the males of previous books usually have. She is the fighter, she is the one knowledgable about combat, and in the book she has to mentor Razvan in these arts. This was refreshing, especially the showdown with the arrogant Carpathian males ^^
However it also changes the core of the novel, in that Razvan doesnt fill the usual role of overbearing, controlling mascho -but somehow incredibly sexy and lovable leading man (I admit I prefer those, to emo Razvan (sorry)) - As the story progress Feehan lets him get away with insisting on caring for his mate, but I really get the feeling this is done to not emasculate him rather than to make sense. In some cases him participating actually makes Ivory more vulnerable in combat not the opposite. However, understanding that we cannot have a useless Carpathian male, and focusing on his terrible emotional hurts and the trauma he has survived, the story becomes more a matter of how love can heal a persons distorted self image, something they both need from eachother.
Overlining the story of Ivory and Razvan is the common goal from previous books, of finding a way to destroy the microbes that Xavier has infected the female Carpathians with. The cause of the many stillborns and prematures. This storyline moves forward a bit, but at a very slow pace. It has been underlining the books since Shea was introduced. So really, lets move on with it shall we.
I have only given Dark Slayer 3 stars. Please understand that I have read and purchased every other book in the series, and will continue to do so. However I am finding it increasingly iritating that so many of the books "promising" pages are filled up with chants and other carpathian gimmicks. Now if I wanted to roleplay these stories, then great, but thats not really why I read them, and I skip it completely. Some might enjoy reading these but, it bores me, hence only 3 stars.
