Two of TV`s funniest and most popular comic actors, Zach Braff (Scrubs) and Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) take no prisoners as they fight it out for the love of Sofia (Amanda Peet). Tom Reilly (Braff) and his wife Sofia (Peet) have just had a baby and when Sofia, the breadwinner, decides to be a stay-at-home mum, it's all change. They move out of the city, back to Sofia's hometown where Tom is offered a job at the firm run by his father-in-law (The legendary Charles Grodin). Everything seems to be fitting nicely into place until Chip (Bateman), Sofia's ex-boyfriend, local hero and all-round wonder-boy is appointed as Tom's manager. Chip's flame for Sofia still burns brightly and he will stop at nothing to see Tom undermined, humiliated and made a fool of in order to win back his ex...
Synopsis
This rollicking and slightly absurd comedy from director Jesse Peretz (FIRST LOVE, LAST RITES) begins when Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) loses his promising chef job at a swanky New York restaurant. He is compelled to move to small-town Ohio to take a job with his father-in-law (Charles Grodin) at an advertising agency to support his wife, Sofia (Amanda Peet), and newborn son. Tom's adjustment to the rhythms and rituals of the office world is awkward at best, and complicated by the presence of an old high-school flame of Sofia's (Jason Bateman), a passive-aggressive paraplegic who schemes to get Sofia back. Meanwhile, Sofia must cope with the shock of switching roles from powerful big-city lawyer to stay-at-home suburban mother. Young working parents will identify with the familiar conflicts presented here as the embattled Tom and frustrated Sofia struggle to make sense of their new responsibilities. Braff purveys his patented nerdy charm as a nice guy whose behaviour becomes more and more manic as the rug gets continually pulled out from under him, and Peet is a lovely screen presence even as her character's patience and enthusiasm fade in less than attractive ways. Their performances blend wry intelligence with out-and-out slapstick, and they are supported by a superb ensemble cast including Amy Poehler, Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, Donal Logue, and Mia Farrow. While some of the situations and jokes border on tasteless, it's the smart kind of gross-out humor of a Farrelly Brothers or Jay Roach film, and the film never never loses its heart, as embodied by Braff and Peet.

A bit disappointing
Zach Braff is a bit of a loser who moves with his wife,(Amanda Peet), & baby to where his in-laws live and gets a job at his father-in-laws,(Charles Grodin), workplace,( run by a hippy with an 'off the wall approach' to buisiness),. It's at his new job that he quickly makes enemies with wheelchair bound former wifes boyfriend,(Jason Bateman),.
The line-up promises far more than a very lazy script delivers. So much is just left that should have been used to create some much needed laughs, Braffs potty new boss, Batemans life, Grodins reaction to his being fired, Peets ambitions & Mia Farrow as Braffs mother in law are just a few examples and are all totally left to the viewers imagination.
There are some funny moments and certainly the usual plot is not always followed and the reason for 3 stars is the easygoing charm of Braff & Bateman, even the usually wooden Peet is good and Grodin steals every scene he's in.
This is not terrible but it could easily have been so much better. Perhaps a less iron-like grip by director Peretz my have allowed the 2 main actors the air to inject more humour, take a look at the bloopers to see their ability to ad-lib.
The picture is fine if not outstanding & sound is fine with dialogue clear.
Close but not quite.
Pretty good - Average to Good
Most males will get this film, see the funny side and laugh about the daft scenarios we've probably all experienced. Maybe just not in such a Hollywood way though.
Really enjoyed it, hadn't expected too much. But it delivered a few laughs and an evening wasn't a total waste. A good one to watch with your other half.
Absolutely AWFUL!!!
I literally just popped out to the video store to get something light-hearted and humerous to help end the weekend off. There's not a lot of great comedy films out at the moment, and so I took a chance on the tag line which mooted it as being 'so funny you'll laugh unctrollably'.....whoever wrote that needs to never review a film again as it was so wide of the mark it's untrue. I didn't laugh ONCE. In fact I was cringing most of the time, and the rest of the time I was trying not to a)fall asleep or b) turn it off, take it back and demand my money back. This film is a poor mans Meet The Parents, and if forced, I'd rather have watched a repeat of that, than sit through The Ex....
The storyline was boring, the characters were dull and lacked any depth at all, and the gags were just rubbish. To cap it all, the ending was just there....you know what's going to happen, and it's just like, here you go....THE END....not funny....AT ALL! AVOID!
