Develop your toddler's creativity with the Crayola Mini Kids Sponge Painting Set. Part of the Mini Kids range, this set is suitable for children aged three years and above, and is designed with free play and simplicity in mind.

The kit, which is contained in a plastic, zipped bag measuring roughly 20cm (8in) x 14cm (5.5in) x 9cm (3.5in) includes six pots of washable paint (in the tester's set: 2 x blue, 2 x yellow and 2 x red, though colours may vary); four foam painting sponges (in the tester's set, a red heart, blue dolphin, green butterfly and lilac teddy); a paint mixing dish; a paintbrush; a pad of A5 white paper and a wipe-clean plastic play mat measuring roughly 47cm (18.5in) x 39 cm (15.5 in) that is covered in a bright, joyful scene featuring various animals.

The idea is that paint using brush, sponges or even fingers, and create to their imagination's delight. The sponges each have a raised "handle" on the back to ensure easy grip for little fingers, and the broad, shallow dish allows ample opportunity for creating many colours from the primary paints provided. The paint washes off hands and skin with warm, soapy water, and should come off clothes in a normal cycle (though the tester soaked the pinny first, to make sure, and the paint then washed off in the machine without any trouble).

The Mini Kids range from Crayola is specifically aimed at the youngest of children to encourage creativity from the earliest age. All materials are perfectly safe and suitable for pre-schoolers and will not only encourage creativity, but will also aid imaginative play, colour recognition, hand-to-eye co-ordination and can help with colour mixing and shape recognition at a more advanced stage. The clear plastic bag (complete with handle) which holds the kit makes a great storage bag and as long as the brush and sponges are thoroughly washed and dried before storing, will ensure the kit stays fresh for future use.

This is a lovely starter paint set for children aged three years and above, and a great way to encourage development and learning. --Lucie Naylor
