Product Description

In this book Matthias Breiter takes us on a fascinating journey through an entire year in the life of North America's great bears - the black bear, the brown bear and the polar bear. Beginning in February when the bears first wake from hibernation and give birth, we watch these magnificent animals hunt, feed, play, mate and breed until the return of winter, when the need to hibernate begins the cycle again. Bears are, by nature, solitary creatures and prone to fight only if threatened. They have no significant natural enemies. But human beings have reduced a once great population to a small remnant. Bears is packed with facts and details gained over a lifetime of study and photography by its internationally renowned author.

'Matthias Breiter's devotion to his subjects is clear. Follow three species of bears for an entire year, as they emerge bleary-eyed from hibernation, fish for salmon or meet woodpeckers while climbing trees - a gorgeous chronicle of bear life.' Wanderlust (Feb 2008) 'Award-winning biologist and wildlife photographer Matthias Breiter chronicles the story of the mother brown bear...Through his excellent pictures, bears are seen as survival specialists. From the icy wastes of the Artic, where the polar bear rules supreme, to the surburban haunts of America's black bears, these intelligent, inquisitive creatures are adept at eking out a living.' Sunday express (16th Dec 2007) 'That Breiter is a biologist as well as an accomplished photographer is clear. Here, he takes you closer to the bears of North America than I would otherwise have dared without him...Reaching the end of the book, I realised that I had entered the North American bear's world with a wonderful guide and mentor.' BBC Wildlife (Jan 2008) the book is unobtrusive but sometimes frustrating, with some disappointing photographs that are occasionally grainy and out of focus' Outdoor photography

Brilliant book on bears with amazing photographs5
The title of this book is slightly misleading as it is actually a book in the year of the life of, brown bears, black bears and polar bears. However, that said, I love the way it is written as the best wildlife books and dvds are the ones tat follow the personal lives of the animals themselves. This follows the 3 bear species mentioned through a year in their life as well as providing facts about bears that are fascinating.

The author of this book is also an amazing photographer and this book includes many many gorgeous colour photographs.

This is a must have book for anyone with a interest in wild bears.
