Amazon.co.uk Review
When Peep Show arrived on our screens back in 2003, we were treated to a unique and original comedy by its partakers David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Now, two series later, Peep Show has become somewhat of a cult hit. Well, here’s an opportunity to see where it all began back with series one--possibly the best of the lot.
Mitchell and Webb have been performing together for some time and it really shows; their comedic timing and on-screen relationship allowing you to feel for Mark (Mitchell) and Jeremy (Webb) as they plunders through their lives, trying to find love, and sex.
But the real joy of the first series is in watching how their idea--to follow the story through the eyes of the two main protagonists, Mark and Jeremy--comes to fruition on screen. It’s a marvellous concept that works so well, being both unique and riotously funny at the same time.
It’s helped by a strong supporting cast--notably Olivia Colman (starring as Mark’s lusted after colleague Sophie) who has since gone on to star in series such as the equally successful Green Wing.
Peep Show is unique, different and, most importantly of all, a hoot. And with a bunch of decent extras on the disc, this is well worth picking up.--Mark Oakley
DVD Description
Welcome to the private world of Jeremy and Mark – two very ordinary weirdos. Peep Show is the innovative comedy series from Channel 4 seen through the eyes of the core characters. In an inventive twist, their inner thoughts and feelings can be heard – whether they be dark, stupid or embarrassingly over-blown. Wannabe popstar Jeremy (Robert Webb) is a lazy man with big ideas, mostly about himself. He has been thrown out by his ex 'Big Suze' and has ended up living with Mark (David Mitchell), his old friend, who has a completely different no-pain-no-gain view of the world. Socially dysfunctional in their different ways, Mark and Jeremy have an unhealthy reliance on one another – a dependence that can turn to frustration. And to further complicate their existence, Mark – in his cack-handed way – is in pursuit of the love of his life, co-worker Sophie (Olivia Colman), while Jeremy lives in awe of his idiotic and manipulative mate Super Hans and their beautiful but brittle neighbour Toni.
DVD EXTRAS – includes six specially filmed stand-alone scenes plus audio commentary over two episodes by the writers and principal artists Executive Producer Andrew O'Connor Produced by Phil Clarke Directed by Jeremy Wooding Written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain DVD Director Tristram Shapeero
Synopsis
David Mitchell and Robert Webb are two UK comedians who have worked tirelessly to establish themselves among the formidable array of talent working in the British comedy scene. Their radio and stage work allowed comedy fans to witness them as they finely tuned their act, and they got their big TV break in 2003 with 'Peep Show'. Mark Corrigan and Jeremy 'Jez' Osborne are caught up in a familiar malaise; both struggling to seek a direction in life, the two housemates quarrel and take their frustrations out on each other. Jez has aspirations to be a musician, but his efforts resemble the Prodigy on a very bad day. Meanwhile, Mark is stuck in an interminable office job, where the object of his affections - co-worker Sophie - is the only thing keeping him sane. Racked by nerves and insecurity, the lengths Mark goes to in order to impress Sophie often leaves her in a perpetual state of bewilderment. Aside from the fine performances by Mitchell and Webb, what makes 'Peep Show' stand out from the Britcom pack are some finely honed scripts and a well-edited final product that delivers plenty of laughs. In a unique twist, viewers are able to hear the thoughts of Mark and Jez as they encounter the various problems that constantly beset them. Far from being a novelty add-on, this piece of trickery adds a great deal to the show, adding further vulnerability to the characters and allowing viewers to sympathise with them as they hopelessly flail through life. A comedy for anyone who spends life at the mercy of their own hesitant thoughts, 'Peep Show' is an amazingly well observed show that should appeal to fans of 'The Office'.

Fantastic - The Best British Comedy of the last 20 Years
I include The Office in that! Mark and Jeremy are, in my opinion, the two funniest characters to grace the small screen in my lifetime, primarily because we all know people like them and wonder what makes them tick. More the original odd couple than The Odd Couple, the two main characters capture post-2000 Britain perfectly.
We've all seen David Brent doing his dance and cringed - you haven't seen anything until you watch this DVD. Like the previous reviewer, I'm only commenting on the series rather than the DVD, but if you get the humour, you will love this! I warn you now that you WILL try and convert people to this series, and not everyone gets it. I don't want to sound patronising, but if your idea of a good laugh is My Family or that awful "comedy" series starring Jasper Carrot, All About Me, don't buy this. Seriously. You won't like it. If however you liked Jam, Alan Partridge or The Office, buy this DVD and spread the word. You won't be disappointed!
re: The best British sitcom since The Office
I haven't seen the DVD, but I did watch this show religiously, so this review only counts for the quality of episodes. Peep Show is brilliant. It follows the exploits of Mark and Jeremy but is shot, literally, through their eyes. Everything is POV. This gimmick actually becomes very normal within five minutes and I think for the most part you forget about it. What is brilliant are the actor's and the script. I don't think I've seen a case of comedy being so painfully acute and dark, and willing to go that last mile that other sitcoms fear. Check out the episode where Mark, a 30ish bloke, goes home with a teenage girl. Squirm-inducingly hilarious and spot-on. I don't believe any other comedy would have followed through that particular storyline to its logical conclusion. Great stuff. The two guys are brilliant and the view it creates of modern Britain is also insightful. I can't recommend this enough. It's hilarious. Just order it. You will see. Then you'll thank me.
Cringemaking, compelling comedy!
Seen through the eyes of the characters, Peep Show's real genius is in the fact that you can share Mark and Jez's thoughts as they go about their everyday lives. It sounds fairly mundane, but believe me, you will CRINGE as they have problems with their love lives careers and their friendship.
From Mark urinating in his boss's drawers at work, his problems with the local kids, his obsession with his workmate, Sophie, Jez's conviction that he's a musical superstar, the pepperspaying incident, and possibly the shocker to end all shockers - Jez's recollection of the 'bad thing' *shudder* - you will be constantly muttering at the screen, 'You can't do that', 'you sick little monkey, etc etc etc.
This series is by far the best British comedy to come out since 'Spaced'. After years of crap comedy, Britain has something that is truly new and innovative. It is at times subtle, and at other times completely in your face. The reality of the whole thing, thanks to the character's interior monologues, is a joy, and easy to relate to your own life (and I suspect this is why it is so cringemaking - the 'I've been there, done that' feeling).
I want series 2 on DVD!
Fantastic.
