Sony Vegas is the best video editing software for 2007
Before I found Sony Vegas I had already purchased and produced short home movies with many other video editing programs on the market. Not satisfied with the performance or user-friendliness of the other applications, I started afresh when I recently got a new PC and bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum Edition. I can reveal (shh don't tell anyone else) that it is absolutely superb. The performance is so quick that editing becomes enjoyable. If you are beginner: You start by dragging pictures and videos onto the timeline, overlapping them to instantly create fade transitions. Experiment with Video FX by dragging them onto each clip. Experiment with Transitions by dragging them onto each overlap. Use Event Pan/Zoom to bring pictures to life by moving across each image (you need to create keyframes for this). Add music and render to an AVI or MPEG2 (DVD PAL) file on your hard disc. Use the separate DVD Architect application that is provided to create a DVD with your own custom menu. The help and the tutorials are also the very best. 5 stars and a bargain price.
AVCHD editing is finally here!
Here it is, the program everyone with a high definition camcorder has been waiting for! Now you can finally edit the ACVHD format and HDV just the same as you can edit other formats. Just in case you're new to editing and don't know, you can't edit HD footage in standard programs like movie maker because it just can't read it. Anyone familiar with movie maker though will be able to jump in Vegas within 10 minutes and you'll soon discover some of the powerful features that this program has.
Unlike basic editing programs where you can just fade in and out on this you can control the speed of the fade, the colour it fades to and other things. There are easily 100 transitions to use with variations of each, all the usual stuff is here and tons more including a very handy 5.1 surround sound tool so you can make your films more atmospheric even if you didn't film in surround. I'm glad this program finally lets you edit HD footage at a sensible price, up until now Vegas 8 has cost £300 and here's a version for a fraction of that price. What the differences are between this and the normal Vegas 8 I'm not sure but I can't see that it lacks any features that matter.
The drawback of HD editing as you'll find is the sheer amount of room it takes. Even at just 720p you're looking at 200 meg per 5 minutes up to 338 meg for fully blown 1080p with 5.1 surround sound. You also need a powerful pc to run it, minimum recommended is a 3Ghz PC with 512mb of ram and a 128mb graphics card. Even with a fast PC though expect it to take several hours to record a movie over an hour in length.
Until the day Sony bundles this software with their HD camcorders as I believe they should then why not drop this into your basket as well?
Marvellous peice of Software
I have purchased a number of Pinnacle products in the past because they were easy to use and considered to be the best of the mid range editing products. I found the end results a little lacking as the the picture frames were jittery and I had terrible problems with Lip / Picture synchronisation. Despite contacting Pinnacle who were basically telling me that I needed a new computer with two hard drives?? which seemed strange at the time as the unit I have was well above the specifications on the box.
Treated myself to a new Sony Camera (hard drive variety) glad I did as I began to look for new editing software to go with the new system. Found this little package, bit dubious, being used to Pinnacle for so long. However fears unfounded in fact because the lingo is more like professional it has helped my Children with their GCSE film and drama. Will admit takes a little effort to get used to the new controls (read manual) etc but once basics done you think what was I thinking this is so easy, even now I keep finding more things that it will do (old tape renovation etc).
Have produced an hour fifteen minute dvd of Wedding at first attempt was expecting to have to do the usual trick of adjusting sound track to match as close as possible the film but no in fact after adding sound tracks, video from various sources, still etc I have ended up with film that looks and sounds absolutely Awesome especially as the sound Is in 5.1 played on cinema system Its just like you are back there on the day. Talking all around and even better lip synch spot on. Oh Sony you have put the enthusiasm back into my film making and on the same computer that Pinnacle said would not produce good films oh how wrong they were. Highly recomended.
