Amazon.co.uk Review
Harry's Bar is not a debut and Gordon Haskell is far from new to the world of music. Gordon is a former King Crimson bass player and journeyman pub crooner whose "How Wonderful You Are" narrowly failed to prevent Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman's "Something Stupid" from topping the 2001 Christmas chart. Haskell's stock in trade is gently trundling ballads lightened by a slight country influence. It is easy enough to imagine "All the Time in the World" or "Freeway to Her Dreams", for example, being sung by John Hiatt or Garth Brooks, and we can be sure that Haskell's publishers are imagining exactly that. Haskell's husky drawl of a voice is no real hardship to listen to, either. Over the course of an album, the limited palette of musical arrangements and Haskell's relentless lyrical sentimentality become a bit much to take, but it seems unlikely that he's filled the last Christmas stocking of someone's grandfather. --Andrew Mueller
CD Description
'Harry's Bar' is the ninth solo album from brief, King Crimson vocalist Gordon Haskell. The album is a mix of bluesy vocals and folk sounding rock. The UK hit single 'How Wonderful You Are' is also included.
Customer Reviews
where has this man been?
If you havent bought this album yet go and buy it
now!!!A voice which is a cross between Nat King Cole and Joe Cocker.
The track we all know "how wonderful" is brilliant
but there are a few more gems in there,"all the time in the world" and "freeway to her dreams" are
delightful as is "a little help from you". I would
be hard pressed to find a track I didnt enjoy.
The more you play this album the better it becomes. There is something extra to find with every play. Music as it used to be,music how it
should be,and music that you never thought you
would hear again.
Beautifully Mellow
What a great CD. I bought this just on the strength of the How Wonderful You Are single which only really saw the light of day because of Radio 2. The CD is full of great mellow blues. Really good for a cold winters night infront of the fire with a glass of wine or I'm sure it will equally suit a warm summers evening. I really like this CD and it is going to played over and over in my house.
A good start to 2002
This is a very good start to 2002. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this disc is. Mellow, jazzy, folky - just good, melodic, well recorded enjoyable music. One to listen to on those dark winter evenings whilst enjoying a good glass of wine!
