Manufacturer's Description
Jamie's Invention Jamie's Invention
"I was in my kitchen a few years ago bashing up some ingredients in my pestle and mortar and I suddenly thought to myself that even though I love the old pestle, there must be an easier and quicker way of bashing and grinding your herbs and spices together. Some way that isn't messy and doesn't take as much time. I've never come across anything in the shops that has come close to a good pestle and mortar though. I put the thought to the back of my mind, but it kept reappearing every time I was making a dressing or a marinade so I decided to try and come up with my own invention. It started out as a personal challenge but as the ideas came I suddenly realised that I was on to something It's probably the time factor that puts most of you off making a nice marinade or rub to go over your meat or fish for supper, so that you probably settle for eating something plain, when you could be rustling up all sorts of quick flavour combos to liven things up. Does that sound about right? Or you just can't be bothered to use lots of energy bashing things up, especially if there is lots of mess to clear away afterwards?"
What is the Flavour Shaker?
The Flavour Shaker is a fun, quirky and highly original food preparation item invented and endorsed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. It will crush, grind, mix and release flavour from whole spaces, herbs, garlic, nuts, citrus rind or even lime or bay leaves. The secret of the Flavour Shaker is its little ceramic ball, which crushes, grinds, bruises and mixes the contents releasing all sorts of amazing smells and zingy flavours, while you are shaking it. In just a few seconds you will see how easy it is to add flavour to all kinds of everyday dishes, such as meat rubs for really aromatic roasts and grills; marinades for deep down flavour; dips for tasty nibbles; oil dressing for salads, bakes or grills; fragrant sugars to finish off cakes and puddings & to name but a few tasty treats! The Flavour Shaker is sized to give you just the right amount (you don't need a lot) and you can pour it straight over your food. Ready to cook, ready to serve & get stuck in!

Get started in four simple steps
Get started in four simple steps
  • Step 1: Simply add your ingredients, then drop in the ceramic ball
  • Step 2: Screw the two halves together securely
  • Step 3: Give it a good shake, but look in to see how you're doing
  • Step 4: Open up and pour, scoop or run onto your food

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
Try using fresh thyme leaves, orange zest and olive oil for a tangy oil dressing great drizzled on a piece of grilled or pan-fried steak.
Shake up some garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, Parmesan cheese, extra virgin olive oil and seasoning for a delicious pesto smear on bruschetta or serve drizzled over some slices of mozzarella.
Make a mixed spice sugar with cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange zest, ground ginger and sugar. Mix it all together and serve on mince pies at Christmas time.

    The worst ever invention ?1
Disappointed does not begin to describe my view on this product. It does not feel secure and simply does not do what it says it will do. The ball rolls around doing a great impression of diddly squat. I tried to do a marinade with oil, garlic, vinegar, salt and pepper etc. The garlic was bruised at best (certainly not the nice fine mush Oliver states it will come out of)and the rest just stuck to the ball. Luckily John Lewis gave me a refund. Warning - stay well away from this product if you like cooking - it is NOT pukka ! Shame on you Jamie...

A very disappointing experience all round1
I bought a Jamie Oliver Professional Flavour Shaker as a present for somebody last October. Unfortunately for both parties, somebody else beat me to it and I was left to keep this item for myself. It wasn't a huge disaster as I quite fancied one anyway.

To start with I was only crushing fine herbs and peppercorns for which it did a fab job. Although I would agree with other reviewers here, it needed both hands to keep the top and bottom of the Shaker together.

This weekend, I needed it to crush some garlic. Despite the informative recipe booklet that came with it, detailing all the wonderful things it would do, including crushing garlic to a pulp for marinades and dressings, it failed to do the job.

I decided to wash the device up and have another go at a later date. The rubber seal came away in the washing up water. It won't go back, and I've only done pepper this evening which has ended up all over the working top.

Unimpressed doesn't describe how I feel. I can only think that 'cut away from camera and we'll crush by another means' goes on in the Oliver programmes. I would not recommend this item. In fact, I've gone back to my cheap and cheerful £6.99 basic pestle and mortar.

Meanwhile, if anybody has any bright ideas as to how I can re-seal my shaker, they'd be very gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Useless1
I loved the idea of this product and spend alot of time in the kitchen. When I received it yesterday I was monumentally disapointed. U could not shut the unit very well and when I tried it out it came appart in my hand, the hard ceramic ball shot out narrowly missing my housemate. Had this ball hit a window it would have gone straight through. I am returning the 2 I bought as I am too embaressed to give it as a present. I highly recommend you steer clear...
