Synopsis
Much imitated but rarely bettered, this disc features both spin off movies from the hugely popular 1970s detective series THE SWEENEY. In the first film, DI Regan (John Thaw) is asked to investigate the mysterious death of a friend's girlfriend. But as he is suspended, he can't ask his partner, DC Carter (Dennis Waterman) for any help. With no support, he must go alone to find the killer.
In THE SWEENEY 2, Regan and Carter are reunited and on the trail of gang of robbers who only ever steal exactly 100,000. The trail leads them as far as Beirut and Malta but the answer may lie closer to home in the shape of a corrupt ex-policeman played by Denholm Elliot.

Shut it!4
Great stuff. A shameless world of birds, shooters, guvnors and cars like your dad drove..

This is how the Bill used to be before they adopted soap-opera style plots and policemen and women who look like catalogue models. The Sweeney movies are a wonderful mix of vicious villains and grumpy, randy, chain smoking, drink-driving policemen. Yes the clothes and decor are hilarious (check out Carter's migraine-inducing bathroom wallpaper in the 1st movie)but they are absorbing, exciting thrillers. Sweeney 2 is my favourite, as the action is offset by a surprising amount of humour. The bickering, occasionally bumbling policemen ( the brewery stake-out is hysterical)and the running gags of Regan and the telephonist and his frustration with his new driver make the characters that little bit more human than your average uk police show of the time. John Thaw's potrayal of shock and frustration at the bloody climax is truly moving. His rapport with Dennis Waterman makes them one of THE great double acts of '70s tv
Wonderful un-pc fun

Great stuff from the sweeney boys4
There is a bit of a snooty myth going around that the Sweeney movies weren't up to much. Unpleasant cash-ins with very little to recommend them.

I must contest this view. 'Sweeney' - the most maligned - is a pretty good crime thriller. Okay, it's not Jack and George leaning on a 'snout' to get the 'blaggers' in the typical Sweeney way, however, as a sort-of political thriller, it holds together.

Regan is framed and off the force. Can he get back? Well, of course, but he also puts paid to a massive, American-led conspiracy. Diane Keen is great and, gosh, you do get to see a lot of her and the Oxo woman is a high class call girl! Goodness. Great period feel and I actually thought the ending was pretty sweet.

I was less convinced by Sweeney 2, which is generally felt superior because Troy Kennedy Martin wrote the script. Don't get me wrong, it is tremendous fun, but why these blaggers were shooting their own team members if they looked like getting caught was beyond me. Seventies blaggers were not famatics, they were professional criminals.

Nevertheless - great entertainment. Regan, drunk, trying to chat up the woman from the The Upper Hand. Superb.

Buy it and add to all those Sweeney series. You deserve it!

Regan, Carter, Ford Granadas, villians getting a good kicking, what more could anyone want?! Great value and a must for your collection.
